I pulled the front tank from my 78. I found A pigtail with a plug in the end of it. It looked like a flat 6 or 7 prong plug. I am wondering if this is part of the camper special option. What does it do?
I am not good enough to post a pic. I finally got around to testing the plug. It is a flat 6 prong plug with a factory plug in it to keep critters out. If you remove the cap you can see 1 male prong and 5 female prongs. starting with the male prong the wires tested out Ground, Right Turn, Left Turn, Taillights, B+, ???.
Does any one have any idea what the last wire is used for. I could not get it to show any voltage with my test light? Also, does any one have any idea if the other end of this plug is available? Lastly, why did they bury this handy gadget in such a inaccessible spot? Must be so every PO prior to me could attempt their own trailer wiring?
Any one know how this wiring is supposed to work. Still dont know what the last prong does?

This connector is there so you could plug into the harness that came with the overhead camper, and have all your lights work correctly. Back in the day you could probably buy the other end of this connector at the parts counter, but I'm sure its long gone by now.
This last pin should be for the backup lights, check it out with your test light.
ok so i see in the parts book that there was a trailer wiring kit. Does anybody know how the trailer wiring kit would have worked - i'm not sure I've seen any trailer electrical connections on these old trucks mounted at the rear like what comes on the newer trucks today. Any thoughts on this since it goes along the lines of the 6-7 pin connection that was found up under the truck that was supposedly for the campers?
I did verify that that last of 6 pins as described above is for backup lights. I would like to put a rv style plug at the location (under the bed) where this pigtail for the camper harness is. Reason being, I can plug my little camper in there and plug the boat trailer in to the bumper plug in. Has anyone experimented with grafting 2 flat four style plugs into the flat 6 for the purposes of not butchering the factory plug. I think it would be ugly to cut it off and resplice at that location because there is not enough wire length there to stagger the splices. I will end up with a huge wad of butt connectors all in the same spot. Any thoughts?
At final assembly, Ford put a short pigtailed wiring harness w/plug (Ford basic part number 13B576) in the glovebox.
This was to be used with camper lights and plugged into the C/S's taillamp wiring harness which had a separate plug for this purpose.
Y'all that have the truck parts catalog, look in Section 130, on pages 13 & 14 under Ford basic part number 13B576 for all the various pigtailed wiring harness w/plugs Ford offered for Camper Special's.
