How hard should it be to turn the engine over by hand with a 18mm 1/2 in. drive ratchet on one of the harmonic balancer bolts? I didnt think I would be able to turn it over at all, but I can, and it has me wondering. New engine with oil, no coolant yet, no belt on it, in the chassis. Also, if I dump oil into the filter housing with no oil filter, should the oil drain into the engine regardless of whether or not I press and hold the center spring loaded thing on the oil filter post? Thanks for any help. And if you dont know, please dont be wasting time posting that fact. Thanks
Yes, you should be able to turn the engine by hand, it all depends on how big the pry bar is but regardless any engine should always be able to be turned by hand or there is a problem. Why would you dump oil into the filter housing? Yes the oil should drain into the engine, the center big plastic thing is to direct and center the oil flow and at the top is a oil bypass if the filter becomes restricted. At the bottom of the housing is an anti-drain back valve. Once an oil filter is installed it pushes down on the valve so that once the housing is filled up it doesn't drain back into the reservoir causing a long crank. Obviously if you don't have anything pushing on that valve then any oil poured into the filter housing will drain into the reservoir. Hope that helps.
The ratchet was a standard length 1/2, not a breaker bar. I thought I would need a longer bar, but I didnt. 7.3s dont turn over this easy, that was the reason I wondered.
