My '92 F250 is having major shifting problems. It won't shift out of low unless manually shifted, and occasionally slips out of 3rd while driving, cold or warm. Speedometer is also inop, except for an occasional deflection now and then. There are no problem codes in the computer. Anyone have any ideas??? I'm really stumped on this one. The truck only has 85K on it, and trans has been serviced every two years, filter and fluid. I'm no mechanical idiot, but not a tranny expert either. Any ideas or opinions would be greatly apprecitated.
The transmission uses the signal from the speedometer to shift. If the speedometer doesn't work, the transmission won't shift correctly, or may not shift at all.
The speedometer uses the sensor on top of the rear differential. A new sensor from the dealer should be less than $15. It takes one bolt to change it. That's what I'd try first.
The sensor on top of the rear differential is not the sensor for the speedometer. It is the sensor for the ABS system. The Variable Speed Sensor or VSS is located on the drivers side of the tranny and can cause shifting problems as well as speedometer problems. It is a fairly inexpensive component and is about a 5 minute job to change.
When I had a '94 there was only one sensor, the one on top of the diff. When it failed the speedo stayed at 0 and the transmission didn't shift correctly.

Well that must be on the 92 - 96 series then. Could be right. On my 91 F-150 my VSS sensor went out and caused tranny problems and on my dad's 1988 he knocked the sensor on his rear diff off and it caused his ABS not to work.
In my research and talking to local tranny shops I have run into this debate on several occasions. While there is a sensor on the rear differential, the only wiring from the trans itself connects on the drivers side of the tranny just above the shifter linkage attach point with several wires on a flat connector. I would assume these are for the reverse lights and signals to solenoid pack inside that operates the valves in the valve body, and maybe neutral safety. This truck also has abs problems, so I'm going to change the sensor at the rear end first. I will let you all know what happens. Thanks to you all for your input.
Ok, the truck is fixed. I replaced the sensor on the diff housing, and that's it. The abs and speedo working proplerly, trans shifting normally. Cost me less than $15. Had to go to the dealer to get it today, and the funny thing is even they don't know what all that thing effects. The guy at the counter said all it controls is the abs. I guess nobody knows everything.
Just a little return to you guys for the time you invested replying to my call for help. Thanks again. I hope this posting will help someone else with similar problems.
Thanks for filling us in. I though for sure that that the diff sensor was for abs only but my dad's truck was a manual so of course that was all it was for. Glad you got it fix so cheaply.
