Will not start in Park

1999 250 7.3, just tried to crank, will not click or anything while in Park, moved to neutral and starts fine. Will not do anything in Park.
Can i keep starting it in neutral or is there a bigger problem coming, got a long weekend of starting and starting coming up, don't want to be stranded.
Have been using truck past month more than normal, doing alot of starting and stopping from job to job.
Thanks in Advance guys and gals.
Steve

Sounds like the neutral safety switch. I don't know the ins and outs of where it is located though.

I think our trucks have a lever position sensor, not a neutral switch.

check the trans range sensor with trans in netural. On the sensor you will see 2 lines.
Adjust the cable so the lines (like a scribe) and see if there are any scribe marks, but the yellow clip is adjustable, seems like that could be it. Just a shot in the dark, but could be a possibility.

Oh yeah that would help. on the drivers side mounted towards the front of the trans. its where the cable from the gear shift selector meets the trans. Its a black unit with an adjustable plastic yellow clip. The simple fact that its plastic it could have moved, slipped or broke. just something to check

Starting in neutral is not a problem per say. It is "potentially" a safety issue I suppose but I would not worry about it . Just get it fixed when you can.

Just to thank and update to those who replied on my problem. couple of days later it was starting in park. Not sure what it was, kinda felt like the shift lever was not going all way into park. I always use my emergency brake now when parking.
Thanks again for your replies.

you still should check the trans linkage because if it has moved then there is a posibility that when you put it it park the trans isn't getting shifted all the way and the parking maul won't engage. It won't hurt anything as far as driving it around other than it rolling away when you have it parked somewhere. lol.

I always mess those up when I pick up a vehicle with no keys. Why don't they make keys for the vehicles at auction.

Good Buy auto auctions charge an additional $25 bucks for keys here in Vegas. I know there is Good Buy in CA too, if you use them you may want to ask them next time.
