3 questions

1. What is the least expensive device I can buy to read codes with?

2. Have recently read a in a thread where someone was referring to "EPA" mode. Is this real, and what is it, and would I necessarily be running in that mode if my EGR was unplugged?

3. What generally causes the back up lights to stay on all the time the truck is running, whether in park, drive, or reverse? 5 speed torque shift.

That might be 5 questions, but who is counting. With this truck, everything is a question.

Thanks in advance.

Simple code readers, just go to your local supplier and see what they can get you, preferably, there will be a higher model which can read more than basic codes. I can read codes with my Outlook, and reset, but it doesnt give me Fuel (FICM) codes that I have seen so far. I am runing a 6.0 I assume with an EGR you are refering to a 6.0?

EPA or limp mode happens when the computer sees something like a disconnected EGR, sensers on each side dont make sense ect. I would wait for someone to chime in, dont believe an 03 would do this, I know my 05 does. ONe way around this in your year might be to add a dummy EGR wired to the outside so it thinks the EGR is there. Of course this wont help the intake MAF seeing pure air and no exhaust recurculation which could still throw codes.

Sounds like you have a short in your backup senser wiring. I would start with the plugs to the transmission/linkage, then trace for a short or a jumped wire. Also, possible aftermarket backups are tied in wrong, did you just buy it now?

Thanks. Yes 6.0. I bought it new, and put all 152,000 miles on it. Had been taking the advice of the dealers and independent technicians, for solving a myriad of problems with this truck. Am now trying to gather enough information to take matters in to my own hands, and do what needs to be done to keep it for another 150K miles.

You are probably right about the back up lights. I haven't gotten under it to see what is wired to it, etc., but am about to. A little input from the FTE brain trust is always beneficial.

As far as the EGR goes, I'm heading for an EGR delete kit, to sovle that problem before it becomes an emergency dead on the side of the road problem.
