Thumbs up Door Rattle - GONE!

I ran across a thread on the Excursion Forum by CptSD on “Door Seal Modification”. As I had a door rattle in the right rear door of ’03 my crew cab that was driving me nuts – I purchased four 25ft. rolls of soft latex rubber tubing and gave it a try, doing all four doors. The rattle is gone and the doors are tight-like-new. Again, another great mod from the members of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice:smarttags" /><st1:stockticker>FTE</st1:stockticker>!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o> </o>
The modification consists of removing the door weather striping and inserting a 3/8” OD tube thru the weather striping bulb. As I live in the southeast PA, I went with latex tubing for its cold weather rating. It took less then an hour to do four doors; start to finish.<o></o>
<o> </o>
I purchased the latex tubing from McMaster-Carr (p/n 5234K74). I used a light sprinkle of baby powder on the latex tubing and it easily pulled thru the weather striping (I first ran thru an electrical wire fish to pull the tubing thru).<o></o>
<o> </o>
The weather striping is easily removed by popping up and removing the kick-plate molding from the door jams and simply pulling off the weather striping – no glue, no problem. I marked the end of the striping before pulling it off so I could start it in the same spot when I put it back on.<o></o>
<o> </o>
When you first see the diameter difference between the tubing and the inside of the weather striping bulb you’ll ask how is this little tubing going to help? It works great, any larger and it would be a pain to pull thru and would / may make the door hard to close.<o></o>

I concur. I didn't have door rattle, but I had some wind noise that I wanted t cure. I had to use 1/4" for some doors and 3/8" for the others.

Saw this idea posted before and thought about doing it since my SC doors squeak and rattle pretty good. Just need to find a place that sells latex tubing.

I got my tubing from McMaster-Carr, an industrial supply company, at mcmaster.com.

I referenced the part number above. The tubing was $0.80 per foot.

Latex is nice if you very cold temps. Vinyl works well enough in warmer areas.

I tried to hit up the ambulance service for latex but they didn't use 3/8" hose, but a hospital may have a use for it. I would look for the stuff used in training that didn't have fluids pumping through it though, saline is okay, but anything else I wouldn't put in my truck.

I did the door seal mod a few years back. It helped get rid of wind noise and reduced some road noise, but my rear CC doors still rattled.

My striker latches are worn down. That's where my rattle comes from. If I wrap a tiny bit of electrical tape around them, the rattle disappears.

I'm going to order some tubing, 3/8" OD and probably 1/4" ID. My question is, should I go with latex or silicon tubing? I'm not sure what the differences would be.

The latex is the same stuff that's used on a wrist-rocket sling shot. It is very soft and flexable. I believe the silicone may be slightly firmer.

Can someone chime-in on the silicone?

Silicone comes in a lot of durometers. I've seen some that were very stiff and some that were awfully soft. It's going to depend on the intended application. I suspect both will work to some pretty cold temps, but the silicone should be slicker and will not freeze to the door rubber as easily.

Having been an early adopter on my 03 x... get the most pliable tubing you can find...
Didn't have to worry too much about cold here in Texus, so I just got mine @ Home Depot or Lowe's... one of em...

this is definitely a case of bigger is NOT better

you can stop the doors from closing if too big !!!

I would look at some different weatherstipping for home doors, there is a big variety out there. You could always experiment with 1 door.

Wow,this really worked great. I went with vinyl but I would recommend latex. It is softer and would match the seal softness better and I think the door would close much smoother.. Thanks to whoever posted this.

How many feet did you need per door?....nevermind....4 25 ft rolls.
