I have about a 4' x 4' "litter box" for my dog in the backyard. When I created the box, I used a sod cutter to cut the grass out, then I put down a brick border, and backfilled it with gravel. The grass started creeping in some last summer, but I had it under control. This summer, it has completely over run the box. What can I use to kill the grass in that area, but not outside the box? Thanks for the help!
I would suggest Roundup (or generic equivalent). A couple of years ago, I went out to spray lawn weeds and accidently grabbed the Roundup sprayer. A couple of weeks later, the spots I had sprayed were dead, but the grass around those spots was just fine.
Find a generic grass/weed killer. Most Roundup that consumers buy is a joke. Most of the generics have 2-3 time the same active ingredient as Roundup. I'm not saying roundup wont work. If the active ingredient is 18% or less, just mix it 2-3 times stronger per gallon of water. The stuff I buy has 54%.
Be careful of any overspray/drift. For specific areas, I like to use cardboard as a shield to form a nice clean edge. I'll use 5gal buckets on small plants to keep them safe.

Is the dog not using the box anymore? I've never seen grass that could withstand dog pee. Most yards with dogs are decorated with dead spots. Just tell Fido to get in there and get busy.

Maybe our grass is on steroids then,,we have 2 dogs, a Mini Schnauzer and a Lab and we have NO dead spots in our yard.

I agree. The chemical is glyphosate if you want to look for generic.
Round up of any sort usually works but is Temporary.
Something like Triox works for about a year. I like the type from Chevron, some of the generics don't seem to last as long.
Casoron granules also work, but might stick in between the dogs paws.
Preen is supposed to be a more natural version of Casoron but ditton sticking between the paws.
Read the labels on all of these. I am not sure how safe they are for a dog to stand on every day.
One thing that always works and is totally safe except for tripping hazards, is to use that black plastic edging., You can buy something like 25 foot strips and cut to fit the plot. Pound in a few retainer stakes and you are good to go. No chemicals involved, just plastic stripping.
