460 Overheating Issue

Goodmorning to all,
Purchased this 96 F350 crew long 460 with 94K from Cali about 2 months ago. Drove from Cali to IL 37 hours in the worst conditions with no issues. Drive it to work for the first time and she boils over on me. Let her cool & pull the thermostat out in 2 peices. The 3 legs that hold stat together rusted causing it to come apart. So I fill her up with water & get her home. Flush system, install a 160 new stat (I know I need a 180 now after reading), and pressure tested system. Leaking out radiator side plastic (probably from boil over). So I buy new radiator, install, & press test. All good now as far as press holding. Still getting hot & boiling over on me in traffic but on expressway I can drive all day. My next item for change out is the fan clutch. Does everyone agree? Also, would anyone recommend just going with a flex fan instead of the clutch & stocker? Appreciate any advice. Thank you......

How did you flush the system?
Did you use air pressure over water with reversed flow?

Fan clutch could be bad also. Does it spin free with the engine hot?

I would think the fan clutch as well, given the symptoms.

You need a 195* thermostat or the EFI will always be rich, in cold start mode.

I flushed her with the Prestone kit that goes into the heater hose with the garden hose. Also ran 2 bottles of Prestone Flush thru her while driving, drained & filled about 10 times with straight water after that. She looks real clean now.
Fan I will try to turn today after I warm her up soon as I get home from work.
195 deg stat is a 4 on that! Will pick up one on the way home. Stant sufficient? Thank you for all your help!........

If the fan does not do it I would think about a real engine reversed Flush as what you did does very little or no good at all. You would not believe what will come out of an engine when you hit the air to it. But do not have the radiator or heater hooked to the engine when you hit the air or they will be destroyed.

I have quite a few drive from Chicago to Gurnee, Ill to have the reversed Flush done when I work there as they could not get it done right in Chicago.

Sounds like that LONG drive brought all the bugs out, I agree, try a new fan clutch.

Stant brand is fine, and should come w/ an adhesive gasket in the box.
I can't tell you how many fan clutches I've gone through w/ my Vee belt setup in the last 350k.

Good luck getting it sorted out Ed.

When it gets hot and boils over-is the temperature gauge showing extreme temperature??

Have you pressure checked the radiator cap? Have you replaced the radiator cap when the radiator was replaced??

I disagree on the Prestone kit and their Radiator flush doing "very little or no good at all". I have used the Prestone kit for years on every rig I have owned and so has my father. They do a quality job at backflushing the system provided the kit is installed properly and the directions are followed.

By the sound of it, the problem is most likely the fan clutch.

Yes, I did replace the radiator cap when I replaced the radiator. When she boiled over she was still in the normal range, but getting towards the end of it.
Installed a new 195 deg Stant with the adhesive gasket. That stickies pretty nice, first time seeing one like that. If you have pitted metal like I do it serves no purpose, still gotta sandwich it with the mayo! Also installed new fan clutch with Loctite on all bolts. Filled her up and let her run with the heater on high in the driveway for about 45 mins last nite. Heat was extremely hot and needle never went past half on the temp gauge, or past the "R" as some call it. Plan on putting some real gauges in it maybe this weekend so I can monitor the water temp. Don't think I'll be able to drive her to work today due to the rain, but would really like to try her out. Those 40'' Super Swampers don't stick too well on the expressway in the rain. I really appreciate everyone's help & hope I can return the help to all. I will post back on her status. Thank you & have a great day!

You can disagree if you like but I also worked at a place in So. KC Mo. that installed the Prestone kit.
Yes I installed a lot of them and felt guilty about it every time I hacked into the system to put those hose tees on a car. Then I would have to hook that Prestone Machine up to that car. But the boss said to do it and it was a money maker. Then the customers was to come back every year and have the car hooked back up to the Prestone machine.
We never took the thermostat out like you do with the power reversed Flush and I never seen the stuff come out of the system like I did with Air Power Reversed Flush.

If you like the kit then keep useing it but I will say I do like and use Prestone antifreeze.

The Prestone kit will keep the system clean if you power reversed Flush first to get all the sand out of the system and then flush it every year with the Prestone Machine.
