Could someone please explane to me what the differance is between a Bully Dog 6 position 4 bank chip and an DP chip? If I add a chip what else do I have to change or do? I only drive the truck about 2,000 miles a year, but I pull a 13,000 lb 5th wheel.I would like to keep the cost down if I can.
When you say keep the cost down.. My first thought for you would be a hypertech 3 Hypertech, Inc.
This was the only "chip" that you didnt need gauges for, and you could tow the heaviest load with out worry on the highest setting.
I owned it, I loved it, it did what it said it would do..
Now.. Problems with it, non really, They are nothing compared to an actuall Chip though.
But if you go after some of the actuall "chips", you can switch on the fly, you can get better milage, yes, I said it.. and I stand behind it. And it is tuned for your truck, the down side to getting the 'Chip", it will be about 600.00 when all said and done. That is before you add the exhaust, and the intake. With a Chip, YOU NEED GAUGES, and not just some junk gauge, you should invest in gauges anyways, but if running a custom tuned chip, YOU NEED GAUGES..
As far as Hypertech being the best one, that I dont know, I just know when I looked into it, they were the only ones that you didnt need gauges for, and you could read your codes with the programmer, it allowed for tire sizes as well..
I was Happy with my hypertech, I AM ECSTATIC with my DP
The bully dog is no different than superchips, edge, banks, ect... For example, they are made for all 99-03 7.3's. DP-Tuner, builds tunes specifically for your truck, your mods, your needs. Basically bully dog is a "one size fits all" and DP-Tuner is taylor made. I hope this helps.
The simple explanation is this. They are both designed to provide increased performance in your truck. The Bullydog (Edge, Superchips, Diablo, etc.) is a large corporate organization who focuses on 1) developing a product when a motor first comes out, 2) advertise the heck out of it to bump up sales, and 3) Understand that through advertising that a certain percentage of your customers are absolute idiots who will blow up their motor if you give them the tools to do so and then sue you for it.
Think of the off the shelf chips/tuners as a vehicle with a speed governor on them. They boost the power slightly and put information about the importance of gauges and other modifications in fine print because they're scared if someone is told to first invest in a set of gauges, possibility a transmission valve body upgrade, changes to the turbo, overboost modifier, etc. they'll lose a sale.
A custom tuner in contrast, doesn't advertise as heavily in the traditional media outlets, and lets their product speak for itself. A good product gets good reviews and plenty of word of mouth advertising in the circles of folks that know better.
I've read countless posts from people who have switched from off the shelf tuners to a custom tune from DP or TW and they can't believe the difference. I've never read a post where someone claimed they liked the power of the off the shelf stuff better.

You won't hear that from me either.
When you get a chip that is programmed for your specific software version on the truck's computer, they are able to tweak things so that it runs far better than it ever did when it came from the factory.
As far as Ford is concerned the 7.3 is old technology.
Not so for the aftermarket.
There are things learned about the 7.3 today that just make it better and better.
.
I just purchased a Power Hungry Performance chip for my F550 with the VXY2 software version and the difference is like night and day.
GOBS of power and the EGT is lower than stock tune on the 25 hp Heavy Tow.
If you dont have gadges i would say the cheap way to go is the edge. You can get decent power out of them and get a pyro meter and trans temp if you have an auto. I run and like it. Now im sure the dp is better because everyone loves them on here but you still have to buy gauges and theats going to set you back around 300 bucks for boost pyro and trans, and you get all that with the edge with the screen. I bought mine off ebay for 450 bucks shipped next day air.

The edge is a cheaper way to go, but if you ever drove a truck with a custom tuner and compared it to the edge, the decency of the power level would be debatable.
My wife's truck came with the edge when we bought it. My stock 6 speed would hang with her tuned truck easily. Since Tony lives just up the road, we put a TW chip in hers. Now I can easily watch her smoke disappear as she goes bye bye.
when i had a edge, the shifts were very soft, to soft for any towing IMO. with the DP jody can adjust line pressure for a better shift if you dont have a shift kit. thats my 2cents
I agree but if he doesnt have any gauges and doesnt want to buy them and the programer its a way cheaper way to go. i have mine with a 6 speed. Its decent power. now if he has gauges already go with dp!
I would love a DP,but the only place in Rochester NY that has chips sells Bully Dog.I can not do the work myself. If anyone knows a person in Rochester NY that can do the DP, please let me know.
