I am in the market for a used conversion van but after seeing the asking prices for two and three year old vans I have set my sights on something a bit older.
Found a 2000 E150 with the 5.4 engine...has 59K on it and supposedly had been maintained well, oil changes, this, that, yadda yadda. Mostly highway miles as it was a vacation van.
I need some advice as to what I can expect with this engine. Common problems? Things to look for? I plan on checking it out later this week.
I consider my 5.4 as the best engine I've every owned. I see a lot of people have had to replace COP's (coils that are mounted directly to the top of the sparkplug) once in a while but most times, a code is given which identifies which one is bad. I've replaced 2 or 3 COPS, all the plugs around 120K, and the Idle Air Control module. Several have reported problems with spark plugs blowing out which can be seen here.
59k is very low mileage for a 2000 so if the price is right, you may get a very good van. I've got 152k on mine at this time. I'm told the 2000 has the HO heads so you get a little extra boost, but mileage can suffer if you like to put your foot in it. I get around 12.5 mpg around town and never more than 15 mpg highway with mine. However mine, which probably is like this one you are looking at, is near the 3 ton Gross Weight that the vehicle can handle, so you can't expect much better than that for mileage.
I thought I read (beyond forums, I admit to not knowing much about the newer engines) that the spark plug blowing problem was for the 3V engines which are newer than 2001s.
To add to the OP's question, my 2001 F150 5.4 has 130K miles and runs perfect (with the exception of the COP that I need to replace this weekend...for the second time.)

Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have

love the user name ! i must be the only one here to realize what that's from ?????? oh well , welcome and enjoy the place !!!!!!! ferris , ferris beuller , ............................
By the way, for those of you who only need to replace a defective coil,
our SOS Coils are available separately.
Looks interesting, but since they have 60% higher voltage and require a different spark plug gap, do you recommend replacing only one if the rest are still the factory originals?

You can replace only one-it will not hurt anything.
