I haven't messed with all types of cruise units, but looking at that one above, it's unusual that they use the 12v signal going to the brake lights to trigger the unit to cut off. That's not fail safe.

Most of the units I have worked on had a separate normally closed switch on the brake pedal(or in the case of the later models, with the pressure switch on the master cylinder that burns everyone's truck up). That means the amplifer requires a 12v signal from this switch at all times to work, and if the switch went bad or a wire or a fuse burnt out, the cruise would not work at all till it was fixed.

As far as I know the CC System has not changed much from 1976-1992 (diagrams below) other than the wire colors. I have the same CC system on my 1982, 1986 and 1988 Fords.
They only have one brake switch and it is the same brake switch and wires that is used for the brake lamps.

They all have a Vacuum Dump valve on the brake arm (photo below).
None of the them have a pressure switch on the master cylinder from 1976-1992.

The system that Dave F is talking about started on trucks in 1993.

Photo of the Vacuum Dump Valve and it causes a lot of non working system if not adjusted right:

I cannot read the wire numbers or colors on the two images above.
If you would care to email them to to me maybe I can help you more.

These diagrams look like the ones in my old Haynes for a 1980. I haven't quit figured out what they are trying to tell us with the two switches in the diagram, with cruise and without.

I think the diagram is just trying to show the two types of stop light switches they had, one type for CC and one type that did not CC.
