supercab highboy

My first post-I do not know much about computers. Thanks for all the great information that is on this site. I have owned a early 1977 f-250 4x4 since 1978-It has been a great truck. I have been looking for new a new body for it for a long time. I live in northern minnesota so rust is a real problem. Last week I bought from an estate sale a 1975 supercab f-250 2x4 long box. It has been sitting in a garage for 25 years-a little carb work and it fired right up.I bought it for the box-but the rest of the truck is too nice to scrap out-I dont really like the orange interior and the red factory floor mat,but I do like factory stuff. So now my question-I think I will put this complete body on my 1977 f-250 4x4 frame. I assume I will have to extend the frame and a driveshaft. The welding and fabracation does not bother me,I have extended semi truck frames before. I would like to know what other problems I might have and if someone has done this before we where to extend the frame. If there are to many problems with this conversion I will just use the good box and find a regular cab-but I think the supercab would be cool. Thanks, Mark

Welcome to FTE

Swapping bodies will be a challenge, because Ford never offered a High Boy Super Cab.

The Super Cab has a 155" wheelbase, the High Boy's is 133" which means the frame must be extended for the body to fit.

Was there a shortbox SuperCab? What was the wheelbase on that? I've always imagined transplanting such a combination onto my frame.

I have done this, and the front clip, front of cab and box will have approximately 4 inches of clearance off the frame in order for the rear of the supercab to have 1" of clearance! Box of course is lifted to match the cab and to be level.

You will need to order specific dimension polyeurethane mount material or fabricate your own. I did not use hockey pucks.

The highboy frame steps up behind the rear of the normal cab, and that is what necessitates the lift when mounting the supercab.

FWIW, I shortened an 8' box for my purposes, and kept the 133" WB.

I couldn't be happier with the result, two years after the change.

..well maybe if I had held out for a crew cab..

I have done the extra cab short box highboy build. I extended the wheel base to match the short box and extended cab. The truck was a blast and I ran it with 38" boggers. It looked great and got alot of compliments. Than one day I spottee a Crew Cab and that meant the end of the Extended cab. When the crew is done it will be fun too.

Craigwell , Looks like a nice job. I have a 77.5 F250 4x4 78/79 style frame and have wanted to put a ext cab on it. I have been wondering what it would take to drop one on a non highboy frame. I agree and like cutting down the bed as I an not wanting to cut the frame. I would not have a second thought extending the frame but it would have to be between the axles and I an not going to cut it there. Has anyone ever put one on a non highboy long box? If so what did you run into mounting the cab. Thanks

Should have mentioned back then.. I took 23" out of my box, in front of the wheels. 24-25" would have been ideal, but I didn't have the rear end mounted to spring packs when I did the original mock-up - and decided to err on the side of caution.

Sold the rig 5 years ago. Waiting for next project, it will come when my son is old enough to pass me tools!
