So I have a 99 psd that just hit 147000 miles. Truck so far has been great, until I got this new trailer. Its a 42 ft enclosed trailer that weights 7700 lbs. Shouldnt have any problems right. Well I headed for a 3hr trip and pulled over to see all kinda fluid leaking to make a long story short when HOT fluid pours out the bottom. I let the truck sit for a day and it got us back home to start leaking fluid once the truck stopped in the driveway nothing up the road or while backing in.
So I started reading and would like some input. Is the transmax cooler ok or do I need to start saving my pennies for a 6.0 cooler? Also is there anything else I should worry about?
Im looking for a temp gauge as soon as this is posted so if there any better than others please post that as well.
Well, if you have an early '99 you probably don't have an Oil-To Air (O-T-A) Cooler. thats the cooler built into the radiator. I would recommend replacing your radiator from an '00 or newer with the built in O-T-A cooler. '99 seems to be the only year Ford did not install these. I have the Ford P/N's for the radiator and cooler lines if your interested.
Unfortunately, I dont think a new cooler will solve your problem for good. My trans will start to puke fluid at 150* now and that temp keeps getting lower and lower. You need to get that factory silicone seal out of there (and so do I!) and replace it with a viton seal that will not swell and contract at such a low temp. I have the new seal but have not installed it yet because Im not looking foward to dropping the trans for a little seal!
Odd, quick Q, so my early 99 (prod. date of 02/98) had an oil to air cooler with nothing going to the rad nor does the rad have connections for the trans lines. Are you sure all early 99's didn't come with an OTA tanny cooler?
Kalsc,
Not too confuse you but I think you are refering to the 9 row Trans cooler, which came on all '99 thru '04 Super Duty's. The OTA cooler is built into the radiator for additional cooling, every Ford I've ever owned back to 1960 had this feature Except my '99 SD. I think this the only year ever Ford did'nt install an OTA cooler on one of thier trucks.
I do not have the Oil cooler in my radiator either, I did however add a second Trans cooler. I still climb about 160+ during city driving, but average 150 or lower on the higway. I went one size smaller the 4739, I dont regret that, but I will most likely be adding another here soon.

It sounds like you are running cool, normal operating temps are 180 thru 220. I don't think you have a need for another one. BTW RUTMAKER, you can probablly see why a trans temp guage is so important now.
Yea I have been looking at some. Seem to be around 50-75 buxs. So how hot is to HOT? I still havent found what all I need to do yet as far as cooling it.
The trailer only halls atvs so 11-12000 max weight.
If the front t/c seal is where you are leaking fluid, it will do it most likely when you get the tranny up to normal operating temp. It doesn't mean that you are overheating the fluid but the seal just gives away when it get warm. Tranny temps need to be anywhere around 60-100 degrees over ambient temps with a redline around 225-230 degrees.
