Camper special I.D.

Just got a 69 f250. I ran the vin and can't figuer out if it is a camper special or not. It has a 390 and dana 60. It has a ranger and camper badge on it but seam to be added later on in its life. It has a side box on the passenger side. I am needing to know so I can get a set of headers.

Welcome to FTE

The fact that it's a Camper Special...or not...has nothing to do with exhaust manifolds or headers.

All 1968/72 F100/350's with 360/390 engines used the same exhaust manifolds.

Ford did not offer dual exhausts on any truck until the Lightning models of the late 1990's.

The 1968/72 Camper Special package included:

70 amp battery, H/D alternator, extended tailpipe, H/D front & rear springs, front fender marker lights, 6" x 10" stainless steel Western mirrors, oil and amp gauges, camper wiring harness, 300 I-6 or 360 or 390 engine, C6 or 4 speed manual transmission, Camper Special emblems (nameplates) that depending on the year, were installed on the front fenders of some, on the cowl panel on others.

There is nothing in the VIN or any codes on the Warranty Plate that denote a Camper Special on any Ford truck.

The right quarter panel toolbox was an option on all 1964/79 Styleside pickups. It did not come with any package.

Thanks for the info. Hedmen says that thier headers do not fit camper specials. I can get a real good deal on them but wanted to make sure they would fit.

I may be wrong, but I am sure hey will fit. I am almost positive my 69 f-250 is a camper special, it has the 360 and I have a pair of Hedman Headers on. they seem to fit great.

I got the headers and a header back system from jc whitney. How hard was it to get the headers in? Its says to remove the starter and unbolt a motor mount is that really needed/ it seems to have pleanty of room.

Mine were in when I bought it, the starter most likely will need to cone out, mine sits between 2 of the pipes. I don't know about lifting the motor. Might be easier. Try with the starter out first, then decide on lifting the engine out.

The 73+ camper specials had a swaybar. It's position would interfere with the headers.

From looking at the parts catalog illustration, I cannot see how that is possible.

With a sway bar, there are two U shaped brackets (one per side) that mount to the front end of the radius rods.

Two links (one per side) attach to the brackets, the sway bar attaches to the two links.

Where do any of these parts come close to the exhaust manifolds?

I believe the header concern comes from the dual tank set-up on this era of Ford truck. The D/S tank extends forward, so the long tube header and collector won't fit on the driver's side. Sanderson shorties or custom-made ones...

this may be the issue, my 69 has the dual tank and the driver side exaust has been routed out the passenger side. The headers stop about mid cab or so I think, then go into pipe.

The header I have are not as long as long tube headers and not as short as shorties.I think the part # is 89100. I will let everone know how/if it works out. I dont get the rest of the pipes till the 10th.

Headers are in

I finally found the time to put the new pipes in. The headman’s fit but you DO have to pull the starter and unbolt an engine mount. But they do fit and sound great. I ran a 2.5inch exhaust with some glass packs. It’s loud but not too loud. It took ALLLLLLLLLL day. 7 hours no brakes, but it was worth it. Haven’t driven it anywhere beside around the property so don't know about gas mileage or the feel of power yet.

The headers will fit even with the aux tank. You'll just have to route the exhaust around it over to the rt side. With the aux tank, dual exhaust is a problem.
