Glasspack questions!

i got dual straights on my 77 and i'm switching out to glasspacks, so i have 3 questions.

1. how does the length of the glasspack affect the sound?

2. how does the amount of glass affect the sound?

3. what other factors of the glasspack can affect the sound?

i like the sound of my truck right now, but it sounds 'uncivilized' according to my neighbor, and he said i should get some mufflers for it b4 i get a 'fix-it' ticket. (my neighbor is one of those guys who looks out for everyone in the neighborhood)

well, i was gonna make my own. i have pipe and fiberglass at my house, and i'll just borrow my neighbor's welder, and tada, i'll have glasspacks! i just wanna know what makes the sound different!

o, the truck has 2 3/8" pipes on it right now, so a glasspack will actually help mellow out it's tone.

Steel wool burns, as in it can and WILL catch on fire, I've done it. Used steel wool as contact runners on a homemade slot car back in high school, was on fire by the end of the track. It was awsome. But seriously, I think I paid less than 20 bucks a pop for glass packs in Summit. Just buy ones for 2.5" and neck them down. Alot safer and quicker this way. Cheaper isn't always better, especially when you end up having to do it twice.

Get some packs, get the shortest possible. Boom done and the shorter the cheaper. Go to your local parts store, and they should have some 23" by 2 1/2" for like $17 a pop. Go to an exaust shop, and they will probably sell em to ya alot cheaper. Dont worry about a reducer, just smack the end of the pack with a hammer a couple times and weld it up.

i know the longer the glass pack is the quieter it get its, also i would imagine the diameter size will factor in the sound of the glass pack, a narrow one will be more whiny, while bigger diameter will give more of a deep sound, this is just my rough guess, but any one else have these figured out better? also material thickness of the glass pack will effect the sound, like the thickness of the pipe you use, and the material you use, i would suggest using Roxul for your filler, that stuff is fire proof to the 10th degree, and would work great in your glasspack, i know they make it locally here in Ontario, Canada and other locations i am sure, but its the best home insulation out there period,

also sucks to hear you have a whiny neighbor, i think there is one of those on every street, i bet he drives some small asian import car, and is worried the earth is melting, and is a real envirocommie, and will do anything to make your day a living hell, i don't know if this is you, justforkicks, but i remember a user on here with a neighbor who was giving them hell and calling the police on them for parking there truck on the road? and they didn't like the users trucks, i don't know if this is you? i think that user had a 4x4 that was yellow, but it was the same case of a problem neighbor who should keep there own thoughts to them selves,

also good luck with your project, i would agree glass packs seem cheap enough to buy, vs. making your own, and i hear good things from Cherry Bomb, disturbing the peace since 1968!

also if you can think you can make them give it a try, it can't hurt, so GIT R DONE!

I think Holiver31 had a neighbor who tried to have his truck towed because it sat in his driveway without moving for a long time.

Luckily, my next door neighbors have a lot full of horse trailers and several vehicles that rarely move (except during property tax assessment time), so they can't say anything to me about my ONE truck.

Several people in my neighborhood have straight pipes on vehicles that they drive to work. I can hear them in my house at six a.m., but I'm up at five fifteen every morning anyway. UGH.

sorry for being way off topic,

i think it is Holiver31, i would freak out if a neighbor threatened towing my truck away!

also if i remember the story he broke the chains off the tow truck?

always seems neighbors have problems with every thing, i mean if someone was idling there truck for all hours at night, and pounding the throttle down the street at all hours with straight pipes i can understand, but to just nag someone for any reason is wrong, i hate neighbors who make your business there's and some will try and find the smallest thing to attack you on, just for there own beliefs, aka ecocommies trying to save the world by removing a old dentside from duty, i like the old saying "DON'T TREAD ON ME!" "AND I WON'T TREAD ON YOU!" I just added that to the end, i think its a great saying, in fact its going on my trucks back window on a sticker for sure! and my 4x4 with a 6 inch lift in the suspension, really could tread on you! lol lol

again i am very sorry for being way way way off topic,

-Brent

23" is not the smallest but I agree with the popular answer. They are cheap and will save you the trouble.

Correct you are, but roughly the shortest a parts store will carry. Or, if you really want to save money, buy one thats say 30+", and cut it in half and use the reduced sides on the engine side, and go whatever size of pipe the pack is the rest of the way out... or just put em right on the end even.
