Hey all I am usually on the 99'-03 side of things, but last week I added a new 7.3 to my small fleet. I got a sweet deal on a 97' f-250 extend cab 4x4 with 128,000. Anyhow the truck has been great so far but last night the power brakes went out and I am not sure if it's the vacuum pump or the booster. The a/c dirverter still works so not sure. I just got home from work and am going to check it out now, but how do I know if the vacuum pump is bad? I am going to pill the hose and see how strong the vacuum is Idk. Any other thoughts?
18 in HG is the spec. You can't really check it with your finger. You will be able to feel the vacuum but still not have enough for brakes. Most times the pump goes out and shreds itself but it might just be getting weak. Also on the driverside inner fender there is a vacuum manifold that all the vacuum lines hook to. Check that for cracks or broken nipples.
Do like TJ said and check vacuum, cut the line and put a T into it. Mine went bad on me this winter and I tried the feel for vacuum with the finger trick and I ended up chasing my tail until I finally broke down and bought a gauge to test it. Mine was still working but only putting out about 11 inches of vacuum and slow to recover. But also check for cracked lines that could leak.
