If you want to upgrade your brakes on 00-04 to convert to the 05-06 because the brakes are bigger. No gains I know of besides looks. I know people who tow with 20's and offroad with 17's. I've heard a taller rim with a shorter tire helps mpg. But I believe it's all in the weight of the tire and rim.
I currently have an '06 E350 w/ 5.4L but I am looking to buy a truck within the next year. Just doing my homework right now.
I'd like to buy a good (fairly) low mileage F350 XLT, CC LWB 4X4, w/ 4.10 gears, auto tranny, manual transfer case & hubs. But those are pretty darned hard to find - new or used!
Well now the time to buy 250s and 350s. good luck on the truck hunting. Are you looking for a diesel or gas, v8 or v10? I pick up my truck 03 f350 with 21k for $16500.
At this point I'm leaning toward the V-10 w/ 4.10 gears.
The 5.4 w/ 4.10 gears would pull my current set-up (2,500 lbs payload pulling 6,000 lb travel trailer with 500 lb tongue weight) with no problems, but I would not feel comfortable increasing the size of my trailer by a whole lot.
The 6.8 w/ 4.10 gears would allow me to move up to a 12,000 lb trailer - all else remaining equal. And I've learned that it doesn't take long to add up to that weight.
For the right price I would take the 5.4 - if it had 4.10 gears, manual transfer case, & manual hubs.
