I have a 97 f250 with the 7.3l. The cruise control has never worked since I bought it 5yrs ago. Recently i noticed that the reverse lights dont work either. I herd that they are related, is that true? I replaced the TRS because of a Starting issue, but that didnt help the lights or cruise either. Any suggestions? Thank you, I would really like to get the cruise working.
Check all lights, especially brake lights and 3rd brake light above cab(if you have one). I had a problem with mine a year or so ago and fixed it by taking the steering wheel pad off....disassembling the switch down to the thin metal foil then taking an eraser and electrical cleaner to clean everything thoroughly...it has worked perfect ever since.
TJBEGGS has eletrical schematics which include detail on the circuits for CC in the steering wheel. These might help in your diagnosis. Looking at the schematic my first thought is an open circuit in the on/off rocker switch.
Does the horn work? If not, then it may be the clock spring which feeds both the horn and CC on/off switch.
Bump...^^^Chicagodragon...you find an answer for this yet?
my reverse lights just stopped working and when i bought the truck the cruise has never worked...would like to try and figure it out. Thanks
There is a sensor on the front of the master cylinder that goes bad causing the CC to quit working. It's called a BPA ( Brake Pressure Applied)....a redundant switch that ensures the CC disengages when the brakes are applied. It's normally closed and opens with pressure. Pull the connector and look for fluid in the sensor, then check it with an ohm meter/test light.
You might get a new one for free from the dealer due to a recall for fires.
You can put a jumper in the wire harness and just leave it there...but might be dangerous if the BOO (Brake On Off) under the dash craps out. The CC might not disengage when the brakes are applied.
I've got the EXACT same problems with a 95. All bulbs and fuses are good. Horn works. Cruise doesn't. I've even changed out the steering wheel cover from another truck that I know works and still didn't change, so I know the switches on the wheel are fine.
BUT... I hadn't heard of the sensor Jim mentioned. I'll be checking that next!! If this BPA goes bad, will it throw a light on the dash?? Anybody got any pics of it?
