New 2002 Ranger w/2.3 and 5-sp manual gearbox. Soon noticed a rattling or growling noise when riding the engine downhill, or at low rpms, or when lugging.
Dealer insists this is normal, and called it 'rollover', which is apparently gear backlash. He won't fix it.
Anyone out there have any experience with this problem on recent vehicles? I see it was a problem on SHO vehicles in early 90's, but still 10 years later??
I have a 2002 Ranger 3.0/manual and had a rattling sound when in neutral. One service advisor told me it was gear rollover several months ago. I went back to the dealer recently and the service manager agreed to check it out. They have the truck right now, turns out the real problem was a disc in the clutch was coming apart and he told me there is a TSB for this. You may want to check another dealer if you are still having this problem, I will also post the TSB # if I get it from the dealer.
