I have found a efi 4.9 I6. My truck is not an efi truck and the process to convert it to efi seems to tough. So i was wondering if i could covert the top end of the block with a cylinder head of the current carberated motor along with all the other things that go along with it. I can get the computer and the wiring harness for the efi stuff if needed.
Switching everything over to carbureted is an easy route, especially if you have a carb and EFI engine in front of you.
Your biggest issue will be the fuel pump, since the EFI block does not have a port for the mechanical fuel pump. In this case, you will need to go with an electric fuel pump and get a regulator to keep the pressure down.
Other than that, just put the carb head onto the EFI block, and swap over the carb and manifolds. They're aren't a lot of differences that would stop you. However, I'd recommend keeping the exhaust manifolds from the EFI engine if you can and plumb them into your current exhaust. EFI manifolds flow much better than the stock 1bbl. There are other things in mind when doing this conversion, but it's been covered plenty of times on these forums if you're interested.
No need to change the head when converting to Carb from EFI. Some use the EFI head on a carbed engine for about a .5 compression ratio bump and the fast burn characteristics of the EFI head.
So just i just have to put the carburetor intake manifold on and get a electronic fuel pump and regulator and keep the efi exhaust manifold. Thanks all for the help. Got awhile in till i get the truck running. Im a poor high school student. But this is my main obstacle. Any recommended fuel pumps or pressure of the fuel pumps i should look for?
Probably have to back up to a carbed ignition system...for example, and 83 or older DS2 dizzy and ignition box or something like a GM HEI module. Better Dirt Cheap Electronic Ignition
The ignition system on your '83 should work just fine. If you have a feedback carb (the type that has a computer and electronics on it), it's just generally considered an upgrade to go back to the older DuraSpark II setup. I think 83 has the DSII though, but can't remember quite when the crossover was.
Either way, your current carb ignition should work great.
