Hi everyone, i have a 1980 bronco, with stock tranny, and trasnsfer case. My problem is, once i get moving pretty quickly (20mph+), if i hit the gas after just letting the truck roll for a bit, i hear a "clunk" somewhere in the driveline.(as if it were taking up slack in the line somewhere, before it engages and starts pulling again) Also, if i have the Drivline under load(like driving on the freeway), and i LET OFF the gas pedal, i get the same type of noise, only not as severe. This also happens when the kickdown operates even more severly, but i think that's just because the engine is at a higher rpm when it takes up the slack. Any help would be appreciated, i'm leaning tward a transfer case problem.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Mar-02 AT 08:27 PM (EST)]Hey man..i have the same thing on my 86' F-150. slide under the bronco and twist your driveshaft to see if it wiggles at all. if it does, u need U-joints replaced. if the driveshaft is solid, jack up the back end and spin the tires. if the tire spins for a little bit before engaging the driveshaft, then u just have worn rear gears. this is normal on older vehicle and won't hurt anything. mine has this worn gear problem. 3rd(if the first 2 dont work) with the rear end up on jacks still, crawl under the twist the drive shaft and see if there is slack inside the transfer case. if it twists in there, but not at the back differential, it's a bad xcase. needs rebuilding or replacing. this is how i diagnosed mine. laterz!
P.S......about the slack in the rear differential. if it is loose, u might want to take the cover off the rear pumpkin and see if u have any teeth missing. this could cause that *clunk* u hear. Ring and Pinion gears aren't that expensive to replace..i think they're like $90 in those 4x4 magazines...problably less at a parts store.
