Driveline Clunk on stop and go

I have a 1999 Ford F150 Lariat 4x4 with the 5.4L V8 Automatic. I get almost like a klunk that takes its time to clunk when i accelerate off the line or come to a stop. Think of it this way, its like a rolling ball on a chain when I come to a complete stop the ball hits me (the clunk clunks) and when I accelerate the ball goes to the end of the chain and hits. (clunks again) I think its something in the transfer case myself, my brothers jeep with the same amount of KM's does the same, but his is much worse. It Klunks real bad from reverse to drive, i put my hand under the tcase and felt it to see and sure enough you can feel the play slack off and tighten up when hes going from Rev to Drive. Mine doesnt do this, its just got this bang close to the feeling of ujoints but not the ujoints. What is in the t-case that would do the ball rolling on chain effect (I cant find words to describe it). Anyone with info Thanks.

Did you recently replace the u. joints that you rule them out so quickly? I notice that you have a 5-speed, I also have a 5-speed and have slack in my rearend and I get sort of a clunk like that. Come to think of it, most manuel transmissioned trucks I come across have a good deal of slack, maybe from all the shifting?

If you're certain the u-joints are in good shape check for play in your rear axle (too much backlack in the ring and pinion). Put blocks under the tires so it can't roll away on you, throw it in neutral and rotate the driveline back and forth by hand. See if you have excessive play in the rear pinion. I'd bet that's where your clunk is coming from.

The slip yoke in the driveshaft needs to be greased. It's hanging up, causing the clunk.

I looked in your signature and saw the vehicle listed as a 93 4x4 5- speed, so what the hell is that doing in there?

i dont believe its the slip yoke, thats not it... its not right when you take off, its when you have left the stop sign, it takes a good second or so after you take off... not ujoints, not slip joint... something else, not sure what.

Clunk, bang then snap and a long walk home in the snow, he's way up there in northern BC where grease is thick. Ford had a Teflon grease (light blue) for the slip joint spline and yes they will give a dull thud not on take off, can happen at 30' or over a bump in the road. My 68 will thud after 500 miles after a lube.

my truck did the same thing, and the dealer put that teflon grease in the yolk, and it went away. when you stop, the yolk binds up and when you take off it clunks back to postion.because theres dried grease in it. try that squiggy, and hey calm down buddy, everyone here is just trying to help
