Exhaust Question

Ok heres my problem, i have a 1977 F150 that I want to put dual exhaust, it currentley doesnt have Cats on it(taken off by original owner) and I'd like to keep it that way. But every shop I call says they HAVE to put Cats on it. Bottom of the line is I do no want cats on my pickup. I dont care how non-restrictive they are, i just dont want them. Anyone have any idea to not get the Cats on there? Slip them some money under the table , anything?(well not anything but you know what i mean)

I would call around to any and all local and maybe a little not so local (within 15/20 miles or futher) muffler shops to see if anyone else would do it with out cats.

Put an "extra" 12 pk of barley pops, in the bed? Hint Hint

Where are you located, I do not want to move there,LOL, out here in the sticks the local shops will put duel straights on, no problem.

If no luck, maybe you could order a complete kit from like LMC or ? and put it on yourself?

I ordered a true duel kit for my 77 302 from LMC. In the install instructions it shows you where the cats would go but they also provide you with extension pipes to bypass this. I would also go ahead and order new manifold studs as they are a pain and will most likely be sh**. I also used a different type of hanger than they provided but what they sent would have worked. LMC has them in two styles, straight out the back "a few $ more" and what the call Ford style that turn out behind either side of the rear tires. They also offer them in a glass pack "Cherry-Bomb" and a turbo "Flow-Master" style, glass pack is slightly cheaper. I went with the turbo and turn out sounded great.

I have sense replaced the manifolds with long tube headers "what a nightmare" and chopped up my brand new exhaust to fit the headers and turn out in front of the rear tires. It sounds awesome with an amazingly low tone and just rumbles at a stop light.

Probably just depends on you're state. Here in kentucky you don't have to put a cat on unless the vehicle came with one from the factory, and if it came with one that means one goes back on it, not two for duals. Has to be the exact configuration. Actually I think that is a federal thing, anybody else know??

The local shops around here willrun exhaust without the cats. What they wont do is remove them. Has to be cut off before it goes in. Where do you live? I want to make sure I don't move there someday.

ive never had inspections either. i do most of my own stuff too. if i dont absolutely have to have a shop do it, i do it myself. my 76 has the stock exhaust configuration that comes out in front of both rear tires with some cherries thrown in the mix. and where DO you live?? trucks over a certain age in any state should be allowed to not pass emissions, and thus, not require a cat.

I'm in Nebraska, but i just remebered that after 20 years our trucks are exempt from smog testing atleast, which we don't have in Nebraska, I wonder if that should exclude me from having to get cats.

Can anyone confirm that if your truck is over 20 years, it does not require a Cat?

In pa, any Vehicle after 1974 needs to have ALL of its factory emisions equiptment on for a visual inspection. Any vehicle over 1996 gets put on the computer. we need inspection AND emmisions EVERY year, and on average it costs about $70 per vehicle. You are considered emisions exempt if you have owned it for a full year, and drivin less than 5000 miles in that year.

May I suggest for your problem, to just get the exhast shop to weld 3 bolt flanges on both sides of the cats they are going to install? This way you can simply unbolt the flanges when you get home, and bolt in a straight section of pipe- so long as the straight pipe also has flanges. Just a last resort solution

Its interesting how different each State is on their emissions testing... and even within the state.

Colorado cannot make up their mind what they want. But essentially anything older than 25 years and is registered as a CLASSIC does not need emissions. But where I live in rural Weld County there has NEVER been emissions testing. So you see all sorts of newer trucks with open exhaust and straight pipes.
