You can get just that part,But if you want my opinion get a whole new rear out of another truck man! that is some serious damage ,no telling what else is messed up!

That's a good question. It's actually the cover for the carrier (not a "spool" as I called it). I was taking the 3rd member off to fix an oil leak when I saw it. Everything else in the rear looks good. All the teeth on all the gears look perfectly fine, and the bearings seem OK too. I have to take apart the rest of the carrier for closer examination. Something else HAS to be broken.
Fortunately, I found a barrel full of these at the local bone yard. He wants $50 a piece. The posi ones are $150.
What you have there is a very common prob with the cast iron hat. Some of these hats are better than others but all the cast iron ones are prone to breakage.
Your best bet is to go with an aftermarket steel hat. you will never break another one again..

Sorry to revive an old post, but do you have any idea where I can get an aftermarket "hat" for the carrier?
I had the exact same thing happen to me. I used ot have a limited slip in my 9". I blew it right apart, I did the same thing as the photo and blew both the bearing retainers right in half too!!!
I went out and got a whole new third member form the junkyard and switched the ring and pinion with the one from my truck, and i just put a mini spool in it a couple days ago.
