Hi guys. I've got a 97 F-250 with the black molding strips down the side. A section fell off the door (only partially, I pulled the rest off). I wanna stick it back on the truck. How do I get the residual adhesive off the door and off the trim piece? Is 3m trim adhesive acceptable to stick it back on or do I need that double sided tape stuff? Looks like the factory used some sort of tape.
For removing the residue from the sheet metal, either use 3M rubber adhesive remover (its a rubber wheel you chuck up in a drill) Or just use some paint thinner. You will have to go over it a few times to fully remove everything. On the trim piece, I use a heat gun and pliers to remove the tape. I dont know if in 97 they still used the metal backed tape, thats where the needle nose pliers comes into play. I just start to carefully heat up the tape, then roll it up over the nose of the pliers. After removing the tape, clean with thinner. I use 3M trim tape that is double sided to reinstall mouldings.
This tape doesn't appear to be metal backed. It looks like goo on the back of the molding, but definitely some sort of tape. I had thoughts of just taking the aerosol trim adhesive and sticking it back on. I guess I should do it right. I've been a little demotivated with the truck lately because it's really starting to cost me a lot of money to keep on the road. It doesn't look bad, but everything is at the point of falling apart on it.
Well I picked up an eraser wheel this morning and went at it. Worked excellently. I also got some new tape to stick the piece back on with. I loved using that wheel, it removed the old adhesive very quickly. If I run into any more to do I'm gonna get the air tool for it. I almost burned up a 3/8 drill. I have to hit the piece and the door with some cleaner to remove a little bit of residual goo, then I guess I also need some adhesion promoter. Tape is 3M acrylic plus.
