Ok folks here its. I have a 96 F150 2WD with the 5.0. I just recently aquired the truck through a death in the family. When I took ownership I noticed the check engine light was on. Apparently they didnt have emission testing because the tags had been recently been renewed. I knew it was going to be a problem for me since I do have emissin testing and they wont even start the test with the CEL lit. I went to autozone to have the codes pulled and was throwing like 15 codes. Not wanting to simply throw sensors at the truck I took it to Ford and they said the ECM was bad, so I let them replace it to a tune of $523. I was driving the truck the next day and the light came back on. I took it back to Ford and they said it was showing p0401 and p1151. These mean the front o2 sensor and the DFPE correct? They wanted another 5 bills to do these but I think I (being somewhat mechanically inclined) can do these myself.
First question, where in the bay are these sensors? Secondly, is there anything else I need to know before attempting this?
Thanks to all ahead of time for your help. Kenny
After reading up on the codes, they may be related to one another. I dont know enough about the 96 302 to tell you about the DPFE system or if you have the older style EGR. If you do have a DPFE system, cleaning the EGR tubing and resolving that issue first would be called for before dealing with the O2 Sensor. If the code for the sensor returns then you can address it separately.
I have found just having a simple 60 dollar OBDII code puller will save you time and money by pulling your own codes. Then remember or write the down for searching only for the meaning of the code. That way you can tell what code comes up during a given situation from the driver's seat. The CEL usually doesnt say what the code is for a situation until later when you pull the codes.
