Well, I need some assistance...kinda quick here, i dont know if this had anything to do with it, but i had just washed my truck...anyhoo, i went to the car wash and was tach was workin ok, i noticed as i was pulling out that my tach had stopped working altogether. when i got the truck it would often read like 500RPM low and or jump around erratically. it was never a main concern until now as it has completely stopped working. it wouldnt be a big concern being that i can shift by listening and feeling the truck but my speedometer gears are screwed up and so my speedometer doesnt read right either. whats more is that im going on a long trip to teh twin cities ( i live in a hick town where its easy to do only 30 and the local cops know me and wont ticket me for like 35 ish) but im going someplace with a lotta cops who r very bitchy and several speed zones. idk where the sensor is so if we can start there and tell me where it is i can trace it back from there...i think maybe its a loose connection and it just happens to be a fluke i washed the truck when it came off.
I used to have '90 F250 7.3 and I had the same problem. It is most likely the tach sender. It is located in the front of the engine. I believe it is right there by the engine oil filler. I just got a replacement from the dealership and it solved the problem.
i was wondering if the sensor on the front of the engine on the timing gear cover was it...two wires coming off...i assume it reads off the IP gear teeth...any chance that its liek the RABS sensor and may just be dirty?
yea i just pulled it...its not too dirty but ive noticed after wiping the oil and dirt off it, that the wires are bare at teh base where they connect to the sensor
My truck did the same thing, and it was the tach sensor. i had a parts truck that happened to have a new (yes new) one on it. Don't know where the new one originated from though.
