I guess they cant build it on the explorer chassis anymore though. It's probably not a coincidence that the intro of the new explorer coincides with the end of the Ranger huh?
The Explorer was based on the Ranger chassis, not the other way around. And the Explorer hasn't been based on the Ranger since 2001.
Actually, the Explorer Sport Trac (discontinued after the 2010 model) was a hybrid crew cab pickup on an Explorer chassis including the independent rear suspension.
However, I think it was priced way higher than a Ranger and with the tiny short bed wasn't really good for a work truck. And it lacked the lightness and simplicity of the Ranger, which was a big part of the appeal of the latter. Heck, I just looked up the specs and it was 210 inches long, within an inch of my 2002 E-150...so it sure was not a compact pickup.
I do have a friend who works as a handyman who has a Sport Trac and loves it.
