I'm new to the forum and PSD. I bought my first about 3 months ago.
97' F-250 HD X-Cab 4X4 5 Speed Manual.
I notice that sometimes (doesn't happen everytime) when going from higher RPM to idle the motor will "rattle" for a bit, then smooth out. It doesn't happen every time, but seems more consistent when quickly droppig RPM's...any idea's or is this normal for 7.3L PSD?
Thanks

79_250RangerLariat - thanks for your response. It happens when driving and then depressing the clutch to stop...when the engine slows down to idle it rattles then smooths out...Newbie question...what is DMF?
Dual mass flywheel, prone to falling apart. Swapping to a SMF (single mass flywheel) is the way to go. How many miles are on the truck? Orig clutch/flywheel? Easy to get into and out of gear, reverse?
Truck has 165,000 miles...I don't know if the cluctch/flywheel are original as I bought used from a dealer, but I would guess they are original...it shifts fine into and of any gear.
That is not true, Sorry Pete.
The DMF runs around $1000 plus clutch, PP and taxes.
The SMF is alot cheaper and more reliable and stronger. It does, though, give some extra engine noise thru the transmision.
This could be your problem but if it does not vibrate and the sound doesn't come from the tranny area it probably isn't.
What you may be hearing could be something as simple as a loose heat shield or loose exhaust pipe. When you say rattle I think of a sheet metal sound rattling. Am I close?
Or does it sound like a spark knock?
The DMF's life is usually about where yu are at and it may last you quite a bit longer. Mine started with vibrations and other symptoms and still lasted over10,000 more miles.
I would say 95% chance it is the flywheel..... mine has 187000 on it and you described it perfect what mine i doing.. I have been told by a psd specialist, that worked on my truck for something else, that it was in fact the flywheel. I have found the solid flywheel with new clutch (which is required when converting) for under $500... the cheapest I have found for the DMF alone is $800...
