dual mass flywheel

hey guys I have a 95 powerstroke..... I have a vibration when the engine is not under a load and have been told by a powerstroke specialist that it is the springs in the flywheel going out.... I know this is a common thing with these trucks and I just want your opinion on it. I have seen kits for converting to a solid flywheel and just wondering if this is a better way to go? I feel like my clutch is in fine condition but I guess if I'm going to be at that point I should throw a new one in there? tell me what you know about it and let me know where to get it.... thanks

Go with the solid flywheel conversion. You can get the whole kit for less than a new dual mass flywheel. I have done four using the one that NAPA sells, as they are the only game in town here, and have had no problems with them. Be advised they are made in China though. I have heard good reports from Valair, and Carolina Clutch on this forum.

I paid around $360 for the kit, but I get a pretty good discount as my brother owns the store.

Mention Cody at death row diesel for a discount at Valair. They are great people to work with.

depends on what you plan on doing with your truck. with a single mass flywheel you are going to get more vibration and wear and tear on your driveline than with the dual mass, but the clutch/flywheel itself will last longer and work better if you have a highly modded truck or tow a lot of weight.

with the dual mass you get a smoother ride and longer lasting flywheel under normal conditions. the problem with them is when you start modding your truck or towing too much weight. they have an over torque friction release, which basically means it starts slipping the clutch if it gets too much torque going through it. so you end up burning up the clutch and the springs in the flywheel.

thats what I'm wondering about is how much vibration I will get..... I'm not going to be modding the truck alot or pulling more than 8 to10K and thats not very often...

several guys in here have the single mass and say they cant that much of a difference. but even a small difference will affect the life of your engine/tranny. diesels naturally have more vibrations than a gas engine and with the dual mass flywheel the flywheel acts like a shock absorber and takes the brunt of the abuse, which means youll wear out your flywheel before you mess up a tranny or main bearings. with a single mass flywheel the flywheel with pretty much last forever, but all those vibrations are transferred to the crankshaft, clutch and tranny. unless youre getting up in the 400hp range or pulling 12-15k lbs on a regular basis then i would stick with the dual mass if it was me.
