I am going to replace my ball joints soon so I will probably replace the unit bearings too. I am at 76k miles with 37inch tires since day one. I have a small vibration coming from the front so I took it in to have the tires rotated and balanced. The shop said tires usually do not need to be re-balanced and that after checking it out they recommended that I replace the ball joints.
Anyway, I remember a few years back about people complaining about unit bearings for these trucks costing more than 400bucks.
I checked on ebay and found a vendor selling new ones by the pair for 254bucks.
That doesn't seem bad at all.
Are there multiple manufacturers of these, meaning are there cheap brands I should avoid?
Or has the price come down on these?
How much are OEM ones and who makes them?
Thanks,
Steve
I would say there is diffently cheap ones and nicer ones. I paid 220 each for the cheaper ones at O reillys auto parts and they came with a one year warranty. There more expensive ones where in the 350 range. I dont know how much oem ones are but I am sure they are salty. You could look on y2k ford parts.com. If I had it all to do again I would buy the more expensive ones and get a reputable bearing company like TIMKEN. But that is just my thoughts. There has been take on here about the ones on ebay before, try and do some searching on the topic. I like others were just worried about the quality of casting and such. I know the aftermarkets that I have don't fit as good as the ones from Ford that I took off.
Good to know.
I was pretty sure there would be more than one manufacturer by now considering how disposable these are.
I don't want to cheap out because I plan on keeping the truck for another 75k miles. I will pay more if I know I am getting OEM quality that will last as long as the original. I will also be stepping down to 35" tires when my second set of 37"s wear out so hopefully this new set of bearings will last even longer.
