I have a 78 F-150 4x4 that has a rear wheel seal leak. This unit is the one that has the 'timken' type bearing which is a tapered roller. The seal is on the outside of the bearing so it will lubricate the bearing. This seal cannot be changed without detroying the bearing and it cost about 85 bucks. I replaced them and the seal still leaks. Has anyone ever changed it over to the roller style bearing with the seal on the inside of the bearing? I'm sure that I'm not the only one to have this problem. If you have done this, how did you do it and what parts did you use?
I had the same thing happen to me a while back on my 76 F150 4x4.
I had a bearing fail, and replaced both sides (bearing and seal). The side I didn't have a problem with originally became the mother of all problems...leaked like hell. I re-installed the axle several times thinking I'd somehow messed it up, but finally took the axle back to the machine shop that had installed the seal, bearing, and pressed on the steel donut. They re-did it, (mind you, the seal looked fine), I reinstalled, and it hasn't leaked since. (they did this free of charge)
I think what was causing this was the shop didn't press the donut on far enough, thus causing a little slop between the axle flange, seal, and brake assembly.
You might have them redo it...sure worked for me. Good luck!
