I pulled the non tilt steering column off the shelf tonight to start the overhaul of it. Needs new firewall plate and shift collar. I have a couple of donor columns, one from a 73 and another from a 78.
Anyone have a tech guide or instructions for removing the shift fork?
It looks as though that has to come off in order to slide the new firewall plate on.
Truck is a 1977 F100 2wd shortbox flareside, auto, C6.
Got it disassembled, the trick was to c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y remove the Neutral Safety Switch Pin. Once I had that removed everything came apart no problem. If you have a column older than 77, they're different in that the Neutral Safety Switch is on the tranny, not the column. The earlier models 73 and 74 have a bearing top and bottom of the steering shaft. My column has one that installs on the Steering Shaft, inside the Upper Flange.
Picked up an NOS Firewall Cover Plate, Upper Bearing, Lower Bushing, Rag Joint and Selector Lever Socket over the winter for the rebuild. I media blasted and Powder Coated the column, shaft and Socket. Hopefully the reassembly goes as smooth.
Anyone know if the 77 models had a spring behind the turn signal assembly and the steering wheel?
