I just traded for a 2003 superduty F350 4wd drw six speed manual transmission. the truck has aprox 40,000 miles on it. is there anything about the manual tranny i need to look out for? same for rest of truck
Dang, that thing isn't eve broke in yet. Just make sure it has fresh oil, clean fuel filter, and all the "regular" fluid changes. Also, if the coolant hasn't been changed, now's a good time (it would be close to 6 years old if it's original). Should be the Gold stuff...
I don't know anything about hand shakers so I will leave that up to the experts but as for the rest of the truck just make sure you do regular maintenance and the truck will last for 10x the amount of miles it has on it now.
If I was you I would change all fluids and filters just so you know that everything is fresh and it would give you a great chance to check things out.
Dito on the above.
I got me an 03 F250 a couple of months ago with 77K miles on her. The first thing I did was take her up to the shop and had every thing changed. Coolant, Engine oil all filters, Diff and transfer case oil and the transmission serviced. At least I know everything is clean and fresh so You can start with a clean slate.
Congrats on the find. Maintenance is the key with diesels. Change the fluids and filters on a regular basis, and address anything that doesn't quite seem right as soon as you notice it. Don't forget to also flush the brake fluid and powersteering fluid (it uses ATF not powersteering fluid).
The AF-6 tranny uses ATF fluid. I usually use synthetic. Drain out the bottom, pour in the side. My clutch started to slip around 212,000 miles so I went ahead and replaced it. My tranny only has 293,000 miles on it now, so I don't know how long they last.
The biggest problem I've had with the manual tranny is if you let someone else drive it, the **** comes off the shifter. Don't know how they do this, but it's happened on more than one occasion to me. A rubber mallet pounding a new **** on fixed my problem.
Thanks for the great advice. I am familiar with with powerstroke,I have a 95 f350 with almost 400k on it,i just am not familiar with the six speed handshaker. what kind of synthetic oil do you use in the tranny? are their any special interval in which i should change the oil? any problems with this tranny to look out for? I guess that Ford must have done away with the dual mass flywheel right? thanks

LOL!! My Ranger 5-speed had the same problem with the stupid **** coming off. I tried different glues to no avail. Ended up putting on one of those parts store *****, and it stayed until I traded it on my '250.

The 97 was the last year with the dual mass, so you're safe there. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF since it's readily available. I use it for the powersteering pump too.
I usually drain mine every 50,000. It comes out looking as bright red as the new stuff I'm pouring in there.
