You sure know your stuff. Thanks for the technical information. A lot of folks shoot from the hip with opinions and no factual basis for why they like one name or the other. You've been a big help in my decisions. Thanks.
I have alot of blood, sweat, and tears in my truck and I've had to learn the hard way about alot of this stuff. I shouldn't have done what I've done with a truck that I need to make a living with, but my *** is in that truck so much that it had to fit two roles, work truck and personal truck.
If I was going for big performance then I would have gone with the spartan as well. they seem to have a good rep and that is important. But if you just want a little more then that is why I choose the Banks.
Alright I am brand new to this site and to tuning trucks. I have a 2008 F-250 6.4L Diesel just like mtatum that I want to get a chip for. I have seen advertisements for like superchips and such that aren't user-tuneable but claim to get increased power, torque, and gas mileage which I find hard to believe. Do you guys have any experience with these basic chips? I am not looking to spend a ton I just want to get a little more power while towing the Airstream (big camper thing) and improve gas mileage if possible. Any suggestions? Sorry for leeching off your post mtatum.
these tuner chips are no good. you will ruin your tranny and throw a bunch of codes.
The irony is that "they" say the exact same thing on what you have when "you" put that on a 6.0. I'm hoping that banks has a better reputation on the 6.4 then they do on the 6.0.
If I get the spartan phalanx tuner do I have to get the dashdaq display thing also? The phalanx doesn't have a screen or gauges by itself does it? I already have a GPS and Boost Pressure gauge. Is the dashdaq kit worth the other $550? Have you guys really gotten everything it claims on the Spartan website, better MPG, more power, better throttle response, etc? Thanks again.

Yes, because the Spartan programs interface with the Dashdaq, but you don't have to keep it hooked up if you don't want to.

I hope you have more gauges then that boost gauge. If not, you might want to keep the dashdaq hooked up.

In my opinion, it is. I have the beta version of the same thing, but it's for the 6.0. You can read DTCs that you can't get to with normal tuner/code reader devices and plus you'll get a crap load more sensors then what they have with a digital monitor combination.

I can't comment with regard to the 6.4, but there are a lot of dyno sheets out there with impressive numbers and better mpgs(but I usually don't count those because what people claim they get, I may not get, so I just don't listen to claims. MPG is gravy, it shouldn't be the main reason for a tuner) for the 6.4. I know he does wonders with the 6.0 and the tuning I have. I would go to the 6.4 forum both here and on ****************(this forum here focuses more on performance then FTE does as a whole) and alot of them just eat up those "crazy professor" tunes of Matt's.
Yes and no. For changing the ECM and TCM modules it really is a matter of who is the better tuner, however, the Spartan tuner tunes yet a third module that others can't get to unless you have something like PT DIAG. That third module is the FICM. There is no other tuner that gets to that third module out on the market, not even the new SCT tuning device The Xtreme can get to that module(I wouldn't hold out for that one and if you want to know why I can tell you my thoughts on that as well).
I wasn't aware there was a seperate FICM on the 6.4. I thought it was only on the 6.0. Am I missing something? What is PT DIAG and where can I get it? I can't find any information other than one other thread on here that also doesn't have any information. Does anyone know who sells it? thx
The retail version of that program would be the CarDAQ which is made by DrewTech. PT DIAG is pretty hard to come by, but the CarDAQ does the same thing, has one additional component to it, but it is essentially the same thing as PT DIAG.
If you plan on keeping the DPF, I suggest going with Banks. Their tuning is very clean and will not send the truck into regen more frequently like most other tuners. The power is good and adjust ability on the fly is nice to have as well.

I don't know how many times I can say it. Adjustable on the fly is not, I repeat, not truly tuning the vehicle and really isn't good for the tranny. I don't care if they say that they have tranny safety features, in theory they might sound good, but considering how the module "programs" the truck, it isn't effective. "You" might have been able to get away with shift on the fly for the 7.3, but the 6.0 and the 6.4s are a little more sensitive to that type of technology and Banks, Edge, and Bullydog need to step up their "game" and change how they deliver tuning to the powerstroke engines.
I've emailed Matt twice now at Spartan (the first on 6/3 and again on 6/17) about purchasing a unit and have had no response. I used the email on the website sales@spartandieseltech.com Do you have a better email address for him?

That is the best email, might want to try calling. I do know that Matt is trying to get tuners out for the 6.0 pre-orders that he has for that tuner and that is no simple task as there were quite a few on that one.
Calling might be the best bet, but emailing is second best if you don't have time to call.
You might try talking to Cobb's Diesel, their out of East Tn and they sell Spartan's tuner for the 6.4 and they might be able to get it to you as well.
