I'm preparing my 428 long block for installation in my 66 F250 with auto transmission (COM). I'll have a detroit balanced flywheel. I have two parts engines (1966 352 with COM transmission and 1974 360 with 4 speed transmission). Will the harmonic balaancer on either of the doaner engines work on the 428?
I don't believe they will work the 428 and the 410 were the only FEs that were externally balanced so that balancer will not have the counter weight.

All FE balancers are zero balanced so either one will work for you. 410 and 428 flywheels/flexplates are counterweighted for external balance. I'd choose which ever balancer looks the best and fits with your pulleys. JB must be thinking of the 428SCJ crankspacer with the counterweight on it. Not the balancer itself. The 428, 428CJ and 410 use the same crank spacer as any other FE would except the SCJ as noted. Check for cracks in the rubber on the balancers. If it's cracked it can slip after time. Aftermarket ones from Pioneer are inexpensive replacements.
