i was about to purchase a new harmonic balancer and they ask me if my engine was internally balance or externally balance, and i have no idea.how can i check that in my engine?if anyone know how i would apprecciate!it's a 428.
But, to my knowledge they are balanced at the flex-plate or flywheel...not the harmonic balancer. I may be mistaken, but I though an FE balance was an FE balancer. I think the FE balancer is actually just a damper???
sorry guys, but I still do not understand.
I'm about to order a harmonic balancer for my rebuilt 390 which had the rotating assembly balanced... not sure balance means the same thing given the 3 different uses of the word in just this one thread.
Should the balancer man ask me the same question, what should my answer be?
i found this on ebay(balancer fe),for what i understand i can use a "normal" balancer with no weight attached.i saw the price goes from 50 to 300,anyone had any experience or suggestion on how much to spend?
Big Block FE Ford - Our damper is identical in fit and function to the original big block FE Ford dampers. It is supplied with a matching bolt-on single v-groove accessory pulley which may or may not be required in all applications. This damper is classed as an internally balanced damper although the 428 FE is externally balanced. On that engine all of the external weight is on the flexplate or flywheel. The damper is still a neutral balance damper and has no weight attached to it. All other FE engines (except 428) are internally balanced.
Internally balanced means there is no weight at either the flywheel/flexplate end or at the balancer end. Actually on ALL engines it is a damper not a balancer, altho a few do use weight there to achieve balance.
OBTW, once again they forgot that the 410 FE is externally balanced!! :-)
So both nikwave and cleanlx need internal or neutral balance harmonic dampers.
The cheaper new ones on ebay ($70) are the balancer/single pulley type. They are limited to 6000 rpm's. I see you have a 428CJ engine. Hmmmmmm. Whatchya gonna spin it up to would be my next question?? G.
ALL FE balancers/dampners are neutral balanced. It doesn't matter if you have a 360 or 410/428, they are all neutral at the balancer. The 410/428 are externally balanced, but it is done at the flywheel/flexplate (and some with a hatchet) NOT the balancer/dampner.
