Okay, I found a used transmission with 30k on it for my 98 Expedition E.B. w/4x4.
Questions? Where is a good source for proceedures on doing the replacement? Anyone have experience in this area? Suggestions/thoughts?
Good luck. Be sure you have a safe place to do this and don't get hurt or drop the trans or TC. Hence the lift and trans jack suggestions.
Suggesting the manual seems a chickenfeathers way out, but the details and sequencing of things can be very important.
I hear ya! I'm usually very careful under a vehicle. Found out the trans weighs around 160#, so not too bad.
The trans I'm getting comes with a TC, with only 30k on it. So, I'm thinking that was a good deal (I pray).
What year is the tranny? Also what model? A '98 or newer 4R70W (if that's what you have) is lots better than any previous year. I wouldn't use anything but a '98 or newer. Look at the top of the tranny...towards the front if I remember correctly...the year is stamped into the case.
This is weird... I was getting a trouble code P0123, TPS sensor. I change the sensor and installed a brand new one. Now all worked great including the shifts were more relaxed. However, the trouble code PO123 came back up. So, I took voltage readings on the TPS and the voltages came up backwards. It's supposed to be .5 - 1.0 volts in idle position and 4.5 - 5.0 in full throttle position. What happened is the volts were reversed. However, the transmission shifted better and engine ran fine.
Then, this morning on the way to work as I was puzzled, I noticed I was getting great mileage (20+ mpg). Thinking that the better shifting transmission was doing it's job. Then I noticed as I coasted down a hill, the mileage got worse. Then on the interstate it continued to go lower (average). So, I switched to instant mileage and sure enough, when I let off the gas, the mileage dropped to less than 5 mpg, then pressed on the gas and it jumped to + 20 mpg.
I put the TPS in the same direction as the one that came off. Do you think it can be installed backwards? There is only one way to put those in, right? Wires are towards the front, just how I found the one I replaced.
Thoughts?
Also, I might have a 30k mile tranny for sale... lol!
