My overdrive light flashes off and on and the tranny shifts hard (very late). Sometimes it's fine, other times pretty bad. My vehicle is '96 E350 7.3L Turbo PowerStroke diesel.
Any suggestions on where to start or what has worked for you?
The same thing happened in my truck(04 F-250 FX4 5.4). The light would flash on and off and the trans temp gauge would go dead and it did effect the shifting . someone said there is a senor that may have gone bad. what senser I wish I knew.
The flashing light means that you guys will have trouble codes stored in the computer. I am not an expert but I would advise that you get the codes read. These codes can quite often pin-point which sensor is faulty.
I forgot , this happens mostly when it rains and I did get a stored code when one of my coil packs went. the code was P0703 something to do with range sensor circut. Does anybody know what this means
I went and got a code reading, at O'Reiley's', but they told me that since the 'check engine light' didn't come on it didn't store a code... do I need to take it to Ford or a specialty shop to get tranny codes? From what I read, auto parts code readers aren't able to read 'tranny' codes.
Not an expert but the range sensor is the device that is connected to the shift lever and signals the transmission as to what position you have selected. It may be a bad plug connection, may be worth checking the plug connections. You should find the range sensor on the drivers side of the trans casing with the shift lever linkage going to it. However I looked at a list of codes and P0703 is a faulty torque converter or faulty brake light switch or wiring connections.
As for getting the codes pulled you will either have to buy your own code reader or take it to a trans shop. One of the transmission experts on here, jk080 in a recent thread, said that at the moment his shop and some others are reading codes for free so you might get lucky.
I would go either to Ford or a transmission place to get those codes read! It takes a special reader. It may be as simple as the sensor on top of the rear end.... speed sensor. (ss_ something) BTW, the shifting you are experiencing is called "LIMP HOME MODE".

The range sensor (TRS, or Transmission Range Sensor) is on the driver's side of the trans where the shift cable attaches. Either the sensor is bad or a wire to the sensor is shorted or open.
