my friend and i were thinking about doing this to his 44in boggers on his chevy and he has to drive through town to get to the mudhole probably 5 miles from his house to the mudhole through town and cops are *******s in town
Make them clean cuts. I've never heard of anyone having problems with it.
Then again, most people I know that use boggers rarely drive on the road.
Directly the question, I suppose they would not be legal. Just because your damaging the tire by removing lugs. But I don't see anyone giving you any problems about it. If you make it clean enough they probably won't even notice.
just the fact that he can fit 44s on the truck probably means its already illegal, height wise. dunno what state your in, but most lift laws dont allow for a 44" tire to fit, even if all you did was cut fenders. here in WI the law is 4" above stock height total. so that means 4" lift and stock tires, or tires 8" bigger than stock, w/ stock suspention. technically both my trucks are breaking lift laws
You are not fine. The DOT classifies a tire approval based upon the complete unmodified tire.
Any modifications to a tire will not longer be approved by the DOT, thus is no longer considered legal.
Driving a cut bogger on the street is rough. I mean the things are terribly unstable. They also destroy the leading edge, and if you have ever run a bogger after a burn out, you will know that once the leading edge is gone, the tire is pretty much shot.
Suprisingly the tire can get pretty light after cutting. This also creates a very large void between the lugs, so you have better have some serious puppy power to turn the tires. It requires a ton of extra power. When I cut my last set, my engine ran almost 400 RPM less than the same set up with tires that were not cut.
I make decent power, so 400 rpm at WOT, is a ton.
yeah we are in PA and he has a 700hp stroked and bored 454 he has bumpers w/headlights&taillights that are attached with plugs and quick release pins so we just pull them off and toss them in the bed of the truck and run the original bumpers in the mud
yeah i don't think we are going to cut the tires because it's not legal and the cops around where he lives are real dick heads (that's why he has removable bumpers)
I think in wv its 31.5 in to the bottom of the front bumper unless the bumper is modified then its to the lowest point on the frame but still only allowed a 39.5 tire max
