steering shaft

I have a 1977 F-250 with a bad steering shaft i think. There is excessive play in the steering wheel and i can see the bad movement at the i guess U-joint. I dont know what the part is on the shaft but it looks just like a u-joint and it has a bushing in it, i think. How hard is it to replace the shaft? Or do i need to replace the whole thing? And will a 1979 F-150 steering shaft fit a 1977 F-250(HIBOY)? a true hiboy.

No, the steering shaft out of the F150 won't work in the High Boy.

Welcome to FTE

The steering shaft & coupler used on 1976/77 F250 4WD's (High Boys) is a one piece assembly. Unlike 1973/75's, no individual parts were ever available.

D6TZ3B676B .. Steering Shaft & Coupler Assy. / Obsolete

GREEN SALES COMPANY in Cincinnati OH has ONE: 800-543-4959.

DENNIS CARPENTER OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has ONE: 704-786-8139.

No Ford Dealer or other obsolete parts vendor has any.

ONLY fits: 1976 F250 4WD / 1977 F250 4WD before serial number Y20,001 (last High Boy).

No other Ford 4WD shaft and coupler will fit.

I replaced my worn out one on my 77 F250 (non-highboy) with the Borgeson complete replacement shaft, quick and easy.

But a little pricy at $200+, but you get a upper and lower u-joint assembly, that you cut to fit.

Make sure you steering G/B shaft bearing, opposite of the pitman connection end, its where the slip shaft connects, is not shot also.

I have heard you can get that little u-joint but, have never been able to locate one?

It was not used after 1975, that's why you can't find one!
A shaft and coupler from a 1977 F250 NON High Boy (from serial number Y20,001) will not fit a High Boy.

The U-joint (C6TZ-3815-B) is the same 1966/1975 F100/250 4WD. It was NOT used after 1975 on anything.

Ford changed the design of the shaft & coupler in 1976...for EVERYTHING. No parts from previous years will work.

1976/77 F250 4WD's (High Boys) DO NOT have a replaceable U-Joint, neither does any other 1976/79 F150/250 4WD, 1979 F350 4WD.

I made this all VERY CLEAR in post #4.

Borgeson is the way to go, works great, changed mine 3 years ago
as was mentioned, check the bearing at the bottom of the steering column, they fail and cause "slop" too

There is no separate bearing on a 1976/77 High Boy shaft and coupler.

As mentioned SEVERAL times, there are no parts available for this shaft and coupler, Ford sold it as a ONE PIECE ASSEMBLY.

Y'all obviously do not know what the D6TZ3B676B shaft and coupler looks like, so stop comparing it what your non High Boy 4WD, or 1973/75 High Boy has...the part is NOT the same.

I sold the part when these trucks were brand new, I have the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, so I know what the hell I'm talking about.

-----------------
lurch460: All sorts of individual parts were available for 1973/75 F250 4WD (High Boy) shaft and couplers: U-Joint, lower bearing retainer, bearings, etc.

These parts are also the same as 1966 F100 4WD, 1967/72 F100/250 4WD, 1973/75 F100 4WD, 1975 F150 4WD.

The rubber boot, however...was only sold with the assembly.

I have a 76 highboy and I said the bearing at the bottom of the steering column, nothing to do with the shaft with the slip joint that connects it to the steering gear
it is the bearing that is retained in the plastic housing in the end of the column, you can get a new bearing but the plastic retainer is obsolete............I had to make one from aluminum to fix my slop issues

OK...I getcha....I see what you are refering to.

This is what I thought you meant =

On 1975 and earlier shaft and couplers, there are two wedges at the bottom of the coupler Ford refers to as bearings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is what you are refering to =

D3TZ3D681A .. Lower Steering Column Bearing Retainer, includes Bearing & Sleeve / Obsolete

Fits: 1973 F100/250 4WD after serial #S40,001 / 1974/77 F100/250 4WD / 1978/79 F100/350 2WD/4WD / 1973/79 Bronco.

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
------------------------------------------------
E1FZ3517B (replaced C7SZ-3517-D) .. Lower Steering Column Bearing

Available from Ford: MSRP: $10.57
----------------------------------
E2AZ3518C (replaced D1AZ-3518-A) .. Lower Steeriing Column Bearing Sleeve

Available from Ford / MSRP: $2.50.

This bearing and sleeve fit the same vehicles the retainer fits / Also fits some 1967/91 passenger cars.

Just a thought but maybe a diagram or pic of different shafts would help clarify.

I also thought there was no source f plastic bearing retainer at btm of steering column but number dummy has found a replacement f this before.
