2005 6.0... Risky?

Hi everyone my name is kyle. I've never owned a diesel before just 6.8ltr v-10's. Now i want to step up to a 450 or 550. I found an 05 f450 that looks nice with 23,000 miles on it. It has a 5spd and a 6.0. Is the 6.0 really that bad of a motor? This would be for my business so i need it when i need it!!! It will be used as a hoist truck pulling out submersible pumps and running the whole time on average about 1 - 1 an a half hrs. just idling and reving up some to get more power. What do you guys think? The only thing i know is that i'm getting a ford just don't know what year it will be. Thanks for any help.

Personally, I would look for a diesel that did not have an EGR system if I were going to operate it in idle as much as you describe. the 6.0L does not like to idle that much. Even w/ the "high idle mod" I would be leary.

You can get a F450 with the V10 and PTO. That would be the way to go IMO

I agree with both liv and bismic. If you are going to be idling a lot as you have indicated, you'll probably want to stay away from a 6.0. The V10 would be a great option since they have the PTO capability. Or, you could try to find a later 7.3. I haven't heard much on the 6.4 regarding idling or its effects but with all of the EPA stuff on it (more than the 6.0) and the EGR it uses, I'd probably look at a V10 in an '08+ truck too.

Really i thought that diesels were born to idle? My brother had a 99 f 350 with a v 10. And for no reason with 125,000 miles it blew a big hole on the left side of the block. (It was just being used as a tow vechile then a sat for about 5 weeks with out any use) So i'm a little scared about the v 10. But i understand all you points. I would really like to find a used 7.3ltr but i have not found one in decent shape. (Been looking for 6months) Also one more question for you guys is.... Do you think a 450 or 550 could handle a 580 case backhoe? I use it MAYBE MAYBE once a yr so it is not one of my top priorities. but when i need to dig deep i've got nothing that will go past 7ft besides my old case. Thanks again.

580 hoe sounds like its into F550 territory. How much does it and trailer weight and is this over F450 GCWR? You can go with a 6.0 in the 05+ model years but with all that idle time, an EGR delete would be wise, and so would the high idle mod for pto use. Actually running a significant hydrolic pump on high idle wont be to bad for it as long as its working a bit so its not running to cold. Thats when you get wetstacking problems is not enough heat because their is no load on the engine. You should also have a moveable winter front you can make sure she stays warm enough winter for this idling.

No more often than you tow the hoe an f250 would do it. I had a friend with a stock 99 f250 7.3l and he towed a 30k front end loader and trailer A LOT, 70 mph. truck looked like crap cuz he didn't take care of it. But it always ran and ran well.
