Dieselsite coolant filter installed

Got to the coolant filter installation today. Took about 2 hrs. The instructions are straight on although I have a few tips that weren't included. The first bolt they tell you to loosen was siezed on my truck. I found you really didn't need to loosen it to work the bracket up under the rubber piece. You will lose coolant from both hoses when you cut them. To make this a little less messy, put some old t-shirts or rags around/under them first. Have the new hoses plumbed up to the filter first and the tees installed. The easiest way to get the clamps on is to unclamp them and put them on the hoses before you cut the hoses. Then when you make the cut you can stick the tee in and that will stop the coolant loss then slide the clamps down and tighten. Its a pretty simple install. I think I spent more time trying to put a new blade in my box knife and fishing out the 10mm wrench I dropped down behind the windshield washer bottle than I did installing the filter. Good Luck.

One thing I forgot to mention. I tied into the heater hose right under that big turbo tube and ran my hose in front of the oil filler tube. So, I took the turbo tube loose to get a little more room to work. After I looked back at the Dieselsite pics I noticed I could have cut into the heater hose a little farther back and ran the hose behind the oil filler tube and that may have been easier.

Yeah I lost my favorite knife doing my install. I used a magnet and it only slipped further down. Next time I pull the battery or what not I'll find my prize!!

Even further off topic. My old RX7 used to leak oil out of the oil cooler real bad so there was a good 1/2" of sludge on the shroud under the motor. I found my good knife and a craftsman 3/8 ratchet in that sludge after pulling off that shroud probably a year or so later.

Not a spot of rust on either one!

6.0L's typically have sand in the coolant passages from when the block was cast. The sand clogs the oil cooler coolant passages which in turn slows the coolant flow to the EGR cooler which causes hot spots in the EGR cooler, when coolant does get through it flash boils and causes puking, eventually weakening the EGR cooler causing it to fail. The oil cooler can also fail similar to the EGR cooler allowing coolant into the oil..bad. Guys who run the coolant filter typically pull about 2-3 tablespoons of crud/sand out of the filter. I hope this helps, if I am off someone correct me.

You could drain down the coolant so when you cut the line to splice into it you don't get coolant all over the place, like I did when I did mine. HTH- Tim

Just ordered a DieselSite coolant filter. I'm due up for a coolant exchange so i figured that would be a good time to install the filter plus a water temp gauge. Ill set it up for a photo shoot when I do the job. Looks like there is a couple of extra ports in the housing, any of those setup with 1/8" npt threads for a temp sender?

I did my usual roundtrip 400 mile run to Tennessee today. No problems noted. My mileage did drop to 17.1 from 18.2 since I removed the performance module. I'll take that any day over the 13.5 my V10 gets on the same trip. Plus I paid $.14 less today for diesel than 87 octane would cost.

After I installed my Dieselsite.com kit, I found the hose leading into the filter was rubbing on the turbo tube. I did a bit of extra plumbing to get the hose away from the tube. I am due to change the filter in the next week, it will interesting to see what junk the filter has captured.

Does this kit come with all the fittings you really need, or will I be down at HD in the middle of this job?

Thanks!

The kit is absolutely complete. I cut the hose a little short the first time so it was close to the turbo tube. So, I just cut another piece a little longer and put 2 zip ties on the hose and connected it to the A/C line.
