9 inch rear end

I bought what I was told and thought was a 9 inch rear end out of a 72 1/2 ton pickup. I was asking a person working at O'Reilys if there was to tell on the gear what ratio it was. He looked up to see what was available and told me all he showed for 72 was spicer gears. How can I tell if I have a 9 inch or not? The bottom two nuts holding the third member in had to be removed with a box wrench. I found some metal chunks in the bottom of the housing but I do not see any teeth missing pieces. Where could these come from?

I also wanted to know what would have to be changed where the shocks mount at the top if I use the lower mounts that are on the 72 rear end?

here is a diagram for a 57-72 9" rearend.
as far as the other questions, i'm not sure about the metal chunks, was there alot?!

you could also measure it, just to varify what you were told it came out of. but a 9" is a very recognizable rear end.

The one you have is a 9".
A Spicer would have a rear cover and the third member would not come out the front.

I have a response coming to you with some pictures and links that will give you the answers.

It is currently going through censorship for the links, so be patient.

Thanks for the comments. Unfortuantly the tag was gone as is in most cases. I do not understand why O'Reilys only showed spicer rear ends in there computer for 72. There were only a couple of metal chunks in the housing. The pinion bearing seems completely gone do I wonder if it is part of it. I have not taken the pinion gear out yet.

The metal is likely from the spider gears. I wouldn't take them lightly -- mechanical issues don't generally "heal" themselves.

If you have those kinds of indicators on this rear end - in other words if it's not ready for installation, I'd junk it and go get one that is - considering the parts and time expense it will take to get it up to speed. Good 9 inch rear ends are plentiful.

I agree, they're hard to find around here too. A search of Craigslist and the swapmeets turns up some really stupid numbers in the $500+ range. I got lucky and found one on Craigslist about 1 1/2 ago for $75, I had to drive 100 miles one way to get it but it was well worth it. After I got home it turned out to have all new hardware, shoes and drums. I knew then I really got a deal! I personally wouldn't pay more than a $100-150 for one. I'd just wait, there has to be some out there. Just have to keep an eye out for an old truck sitting in a yard somewhere.

I guess I'm spoiled living in Socal....

There is a truck "dismantler/recycler" a few miles east of my house that has about 20-25 of them - one of 20 yards here. $175 ea. 30 day warranty.

I guess I forget that our group is spread out to the "far reaches" in some cases where things are not so plentiful.

Every couple of years a wave a recycling comes through here and everything 10 years and older gets sent to the shredder. There's few yards withing 50 miles of here that has anything 10+ year old. The ones that do like their parts a lot and hate to part with them, or at least it seems that way when you hear their prices.

one of the junk yards(owned by my cousin) here has about 20 or so, i actually work out there part time so i have alot of time to just walk around and scrounge for parts. so if anyone is in major need for one, you can always take a vacation to Kentucky
there is about 5 or 6 that arnt even in a truck, i've been wanting to measure them to see if one will work in my truck(the 52 doesnt have a 9") i know its almost a sin, i need to nab one while i can lol.

Good diagram from mostly52f1 but these old eyes have problems reading such small words. So pardon the stupid question but I have never taken a rear end apart, but where are the spider gears albuq f1? So Julie are you saying I should look for another third member and not rebuild the one I have?
