what gear ratio?

what gear ratio?
can some body please tell me a way to find out what gear ratio i have in my 79 4x4?..the tag is missing off of bot the front and rear..i did the spin the tire and count the turns trick and i came up with 1 3/4 turns of the drive shat to 1 full turn of the tire..is this a reliable way of finding out the ratio?...

I'd be willing to bet you have 3.54 or 3.55 gears. You must have
an open diff in that rearend. When doing it that way you need to spin the tire twice and count, or just once and double the turns of the driveshaft. In your case that would gives us 3.5, so its probably something like a 3.54 or 3.55. Of course the most accurate way would be to open up the diff and count teeth, divide ring gear teeth by pinion teeth and you got it.
