How to tell open or closed diff ?
I have the numbers from the tag.
top line - WFE ABC 1A21
bottom line - 3L00 9 S 323B
The carrier is cracked inside and around the ring gear bolts.
The yoke is also stipped on the pinion.
It's a 31 spline, what other years should I look at for replacement.

I went to the junkyard and got an open 31 spline 9" for $50. I took the carrier out, installed a mini-spool, and put it into my 9".
The hard part was finding the 31 spline. They had about 40 28s and only one 31.
If this what your carrier cover looks like, it's a LS. The most noticible difference is that the ring gear bolts are recessed into the carrier cover. If you take the carrier apart, there are a whole bunch of clutch plates on the ring gear side of the spider gears.
I don't know the difference between older and newer 9" diffs, or even if there is one.
