I have a cobra jet block. My question is why does it have 460 casted on front of block. The block is a cobra jet because its casted into block in lifter valley and a 4 bolt main. Not sure where it came from but bought it many yrs ago from a chevy guy. It was supposedly in a car. It had a c-6 attached to it back then. It was a hyd cam engine with some positive stop heads on it. The block is standard bore and in good shape. Never seen one of these blocks before except in mags. Just got lucky on the find. It Has A DO0e if I remember correctly on casting. Just got curious if anybody knew something about it.
Sure the castings not a D0VE. Just sent a rod through the side of one. Good solid powerplant. We had no issues running .080 over on the bore at 510cubes and 900hp short of oiling. These blocks were ment to run hyd cams so a switch to a solid or roller big lift can cause issues. We;ve had a lot of help with this but no bullitproof cure. I am only refering to this issue at an extreme 7800rpms. restrictor kits and lifter bore bushings and a hv pump with an external feed line to the rear of the block is a good start.. Whatr would you sell it for mine looks like a window now.
actually the cobra jet blocks are pretty much the same as the regular car DOVE (casting number on block above starter) blocks except they have 4 bolt main caps. they have the same casting number as the regular car blocks, just drilled for 4 bolt mains. most cobra jet cars never came with 4 bolt mains. all SCJ cars did and i can't remember correctly, but i think the early 70 cj cars also did. all other cj cars mostly came with 2 bolt mains.
the regular car and cj DOVE blocks came with thicker webs so with a little machining and aftermarket caps, you can have a 4 bolt main block also instead of trying to find the rare 4 bolt factory block.
the big difference between the cj engine and car engine of course are the heads. the cj cars came DOOE heads with huge ports and huge valves standard and the scj cars came with same heads but a solid mechanical cam and adjustable rocker arms and factory guide plates. the cj's came with hydraulic cams and non-adjustable rocker arms.
all 429 and 460 blocks (except of course for the Boss 429 block) have the 460 casting number as they used the same block for both sizes.
so it is a good find and fairly rare, but it is really not that much stronger than a regular block as far as performance potential goes.
Some day I would like to see it go to a car restorer to the right car. I have access to a set of cj head and factory intake also. Had this stuff for about 15 yrs. Just cool to get the ford guys stirred up when they see it in real life. Even got some cleveland 4v stuff thats cool to look at. Back in the day stuff. People just like seeing this old hot rod parts. I'll probably hang on to it. Got some of those dove block just for mudholin and drag stuff. I usually help people more than play these days especially my ford guys.
