I have found a 1971 351 for sale and the guy thinks it may be a cobra jet but is not sure and neither am I. The casting number I got is D2AE-CA and the casting for the crank is 4MA. Can someone please tell me if this is a cobra jet or a plain jane or what.
an easy way is to look at the carb´s size, you could also look at the serial number from the car vin where it came from it should have a Q code:
1 Last digit of model year
T Assembly plant (F-Dearborn, T-Metuchen)
02 Body code (01-Coupe, 02-Fastback, 03-Convertible, 04-Grandé, 05-Mach 1)
M Engine code
100001 Consecutive unit number
the engine codes for a 71 are:
250cid 1V 6-cyl 145 hp L Code
302cid 2V V-8 210 hp F Code
351cid 2V V-8 240 hp H Code
351cid 4V V-8 280 hp Cobra Jet Q Code
351cid 4V V-8 285 hp M Code
351cid 4V V-8 330 hp Boss R Code
429cid 4V V-8 370 hp Cobra Jet C Code
429cid 4V V-8 375 hp Cobra Jet-R J Code
I have a mach 1 with a 351w with the vin number starting: 1T05H,
This casting number can be a 2 or 4 bolt main engine, depending on whether it is a CJ or Boss or other.
Since it is 1972 though: R-code 351 HO, 1972, and Q-code 351 CJ, 1971-73 are your choices if it has 4 bolt.
Looking under the pan will tell you how many bolts on the caps.
Any of these castings can be machined for 4 bolt caps. You can buy the 4 bolt caps from aftermarket, like http://www.flatlanderracing.com/newmaincaps.html
D2AE-CA=1971-1974 351 Cobra Jet Casting number
4MA=A crank from a 1971 Boss 351 or a 1972 351 High output. Info. Source, High Performance Ford Engine parts interchange, By George Reid.
EDIT::: After conferring with a few more sources, that info is incorrect. I am sorry. All 72-74 blocks were cast D2AE-CA and did not have to be a CJ engine. Sorry the interchange book is Wrong. Cranks too, sorry.

Thanks folks for your help but I have decided to go for a complete 460 that the same owner has for the same price. Thanks again for the info and the effort.
Well, thanks for stopping by the 335 forum just the same...
Hello I was wondering If you happen to buy a Truck/Car and it doesnt have the original engine in it is there any way to tell by the engine serial what type of automobile it came out of ? My engine serial is D2AE-CA below this number around where the starter mounts is 3M6. Now I am sure its a 1972 351 Cleveland what Id like to know is what kind ? High compression low compression ? I was also told that the third digit in the code After giving the year was suppose to tell you the model of car or cars it was put in is this true and is there some table or chart on the web that breaks this egyptian code down LOL
3M6 would dictate the casting of the block on December 6th, 1973. To verify this, a decal on the valve cover will indicate being built after Feb. 1973 (before would be a tag mounted somewhere). However, it still falls under the timeline of the 351C. (1974)
The letter A in your casting code would just be a full size Ford, nothing specific.

How do I know whether its a actual cleveland or a m/400 ?
The 351M was not installed in vehicles until 1975. So, to tell from 351C and 400 is to measure the width of the intake manifold. The 400 is an inch wider when measuring between heads.
I mesure the top of 351m400 intake manifold from edelbrock : 12 1/2 "(+/- 1/4")
Hey whats up mustang 81, hows your 400/mustang project going? since I myself Im building a 400 for a 73 mustang im curious how is your project going.... pictures?
