I just got it a few weeks ago, its a 1979 4x4 F-150 Ranger.
Although im pretty sure i need to rebuild the engine, i think the cams messed up but it deffinately needs a tune up and i need to do a compression test. Along with the transmission, i'll put it in park and i'll be hitting high rpms before it kicks in gear sometimes. I just flushed the transmission and changed the filter.
Congrats. You have a real truck. They are a lot more powerful and more comfortable ones out there. But mine allways starts(once it gets gas to it) and is a workhorse.
transmission flush in a old truck like that can cause some major problems. it loosens all the sludge and buildups which then circulate through the tranny. i know they tell you transmission flushes are good, but not on an old transmission. did you find any chunks when you replaced the filter?

i'm not sure, my father had changed it as a present i guess? like "heres a truck! and i even flushed the trans." it also has a 351M in it, brakes are garbage, transmission lines in the front are leaking. whole body is shot, needs just about a new everything.
i have a project like that myself. when i bought my truck it had no reverse, ended up rebuilding the entire transmission b/c of a broken reverse band. and im not saying that anything will happen to your tranny, only that it can. is it a manual or automatic?

if you have the money or can do it yourself id rebuild the tranny. or take it to someone to try to find out what the problems is. with a c-4 its about a $900 (max) job if you drop it yourself, i know someone who rebuilds transmissions out of his garage so i got it done for $300 otherwise i wouldnt have bought a truck with no reverse.
