I got a 96 f-150 with and inline 6, with a 5 speed manual tranny, and i've got a problem with it popping out of 2nd gear cant figure it out.
also wondering if anyone knows how tough it would be to just swap a tranny out of an auto wrecker.
If anyones got any info give me a shout id greatly apreciate it.
Thanks
These manuals usually last a long time.. my cousin beat the hell out of his 300k truck for 60k miles of his use and the trans is fine... So finding a good one shouldn't be hard. They are not to hard to replace. I've helped him pull it twice clutch.. then slave cylinder.. I recommend replacing these both if you can afford it and they have been in there awhile.. throw out bearing etc.. Consider a new rear main seal while you are digging around in there...
Even if your a 240lb logger or 220 lb weight lifter(my cousin and me) they can be heavy and slippery-covered in oil etc. Have a buddy there drinking your beer incase you drop a transmission on yourself. Transjack recommended.. Just be careful.
Thanks dude, that was a great help I hope to get it done in the next week or 2, ive just been skipping 2nd gear goin right to third..haha. but ya i found a couple trannys around here and should be ordering the parts up soon, thanks alot i appreciate that, and ill make sure theres a guy there drinkin all my beer, that usualy how it goes anyway.
Thanks
Make sure you get the speedo cable, slave cylinder hardline(should be a disconnect under a rubber access plate), all the transmission bolts, etc. My cousins truck was 2wd if yours is 4x4 it is quite a bit more work. Drain the transmission first... I'd take the rear axle off Next... Block the tires and remove the axle- BEFORE! you jack up the front of the truck. Usually very tight (12 point?) bolts. transmission fluid will drain out the tail shaft at a certain angle or just sitting there.. depending on how your truck is sitting etc. I've seen people use a floor jack a board and a strap or two to lower and reinstall a transmission. Your safety is your own concern thos.. short of a trasmission jack.. that is about the best way to do it with what most of us have around.
